Just for those who don't know, the youtuber here, Dan Knights, was the 2003 Rubik's Cube world champion. Back then the record was around 11 secs. (Today, 11 secs is probably good for 50th place at Nationals, if you're lucky! The single solve world record is currently 5.55 secs)

It's called the Keyhole Method and it's faster than the beginner's method, but way slower than Fridrich's F2L if you know what you're doing.

It's not the Japanese color scheme, in the Japanese color scheme white is opposite red, green is opposite yellow, and blue is opposite orange. This color scheme is another common color scheme for early Rubik's brands, although I don't know if there is a name for it. In this scheme, the only thing that is different is that yellow and blue are switched.

wow this is great. I looked up a lot of videos and many of them were either too long or not informative. This method worked for me on the first try. Thanks a lot.
@iggyzizzle15 жыл бұрын
You could also utilize this in Fridrich if you find a corner that's correctly place and see its edge on the top layer. It would save you a few moves, although it may be easier just to do the lightning fast alg that you memorized from beginner.

Thank you for your great explanation, I had learned the beginners method and perfected it about a year ago and was looking for ways to improve my time, F2L is a little bit harder to grasp as there are many different scenarios, but this one is much simpler with less than 5 minute learning curve!

There is another thing you can do to make it faster, put the correct edge in where the keyhole is then when you get to the last edge put the corner in with it using f2l.

Technically, one does use algorithms in this method. Some algorithms are just so short they have other names. Short three-move algorithms are most of the time called commutators.

Good tutorial, very simple and works fantastic. One question however, when you put a piece in the 2nd layer and it is flipped incorrectly, is there any way to fix that without doing that 8-step algorithm?
@nativesoldier8613 жыл бұрын
@theianography No, hes already solved the first layer minus 1. This is called the key hole method and it is not F2L, which is inserting both at the same time.

Oh, the keyhole technique on a 3x3x3. Interesting. It gets used quite a bit on a 5x5x5.
@thomasrad520211 жыл бұрын
It can be argued either way. If you examine f2l closely you often put the corners first in tricky cases. Although this method is known as the "keyhole" method which is a trick to speed up LBL so...

Very nice video about the keyhole method (although the name is wrong as F2L stands for first two layers[meaning solving layer 1 and two at the same time]). I have been using this method and I have augmented my skill by placing all 4 corners in then learning all possible F2L algorithms so that i don't have to replace the corner afterwards. After this I will move onto using ZBF2L to orient the top layer corners, and i recommend that you mention this in any future videos that contain keyhole method

Ok, I understand that this is neither beginner method or fridrich. People seem to call it keyhole but ok. In order to use this, you have to solve the corners first like beginner ( which fridrich doesn't) but which is faster? keyhole or fridrich?
@xBl00dBrothersX13 жыл бұрын
@verack22 full F2L requires memorizing 40+ algorights. The F2L keyhole trick saves you that trouble. I can solve at 30seconds with 21PLLs and 1 for middle layer, and 8 OLLs. 30s = 30algs. Simple and easy. No need to get any faster than that.
