pity means they are showing you mercy so after every 10 pull you get 10 pity (1pull = 1 pity). Pity keeps stacking if you don't get 5 star character. If you don't get 5 star after 50 pulls it means you have 50 pity now and that means game will increase your chances to get 5 star (chances increase as you keep pulling and don't get 5 star), if you still didn' get 5 star by 60 pulls(pity = 60) you are garentueed to get 5 star in another 10-20 pulls total 70-80 pulls.

Your pity keeps stacking even after the banners are changed. Also limited character banners, weapon banners, standard banner have their own individual pities and are not mixed together. All are stacked respectively to their banners even if new banners come. Weapon banner takes 10-20 pity more to guarantee a 5 star weapon if not received. Yes that means you have 3 pity right now. You can also check how many pulls you have done and what you have gotten out of them by clicking on history after opening the desired banner. No worries, good luck.
