Well in reality only the frame is an F-4E internally is a completely different aircraft as all Greek F4s have been upgraded by the German DASA and have received: the Hughes APG-65GY radar (the same one fitted on the F-18C/D), the Honeywell H-764G navigation system combining LINS & GPS, NAVCOM AN/APN-232 CARA radar altimeter and Elbit Modular Multi-Role Computer (MMRC). The cockpit has been enhanced with Elbit MFDs, new DTS & the imaging system V-80AB-F. The upgraded Greek F4 is capable of carrying the AIM-120, AGM-65G, AGM-130, and various targeting pods

These Phantoms are based at 332 Squadron at Andravida Airbase in Greece! It was a Great Pleasure for me to see this Beautiful Aircraft at Volkel Airbase during the Luchtmachtdagen 2019. Here in Germany are These Combat Aircraft Disbanded in July 2013 and Replaced by the Eurofighter Typhoon. The Phantom have a Fantastisc Sound of the J 79 Engines! Greetings from the German Aircraft Spotter Coleague!

I remember seeing my first F-4 at MCAS Miramar back in college. It's amazing that it was louder than the B-1B on takeoff. Those engines have some oomph.

Not bad for a 1950's airplane. And just noticed the pilot wags his wings at 6:15 to say goodbye. Very cool.
@philj7455 жыл бұрын
Indeed not bad at all if not for the inconsistencies of the missile systems at the time of initial service it could've been great. Super fast at the time a great interceptor...
@constantinosbikos71255 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Grumman these operated by HAF are 1950s airframes to be more exact. Otherwise, all avionics and systems have been upgraded at least 3 times since, with the latest in 2011 so still an up to date platform. But the airframe is indeed old, nevertheless epic. McDonnell-Douglas built a great fighter back in the day.

I love the F4. I worked on it as aircraft mechanic from 1980 to 1984. My father was F-104 Pilot from 1962 to 1973. In 1973 they changed to F4 until he left the airforce in 1982. He also loved this plane.

In the late 1960s the Australian Air Force was in the process of buying a squadron of F-111s but General Dynamics was having problems stopping the aircraft from crashing - as they did with a couple of Australian crews who were learning to fly them in the USA. The crews ejected and survived. Anyway, to keep the RAAF interested, the Americans leased them 24 F4 Phantoms. They were based at Amberley AFB inland from Brisbane. I was living in Ipswich at the time and remember the day the Phantoms arrived, in two groups of twelve, right across the centre of the city. The noise got everyone running outside to look, but the best came later when the aircraft used to take off, two at a time, on afterburners and the noise would rattle my kitchen windows 6.5 kilometres away.

Love these birds. It's very possible my old man flew one of these very birds. Our old ANG unit F-4's were sold to the Greeks in 92.
@truckert97295 жыл бұрын
I can't believe these are still flying. It's a good bet at least some of these came from the local ANG unit near me. We gave them to the Greeks in 92 as a gift for letting us use bases in country during the 1st Gulf war. My old man was a WSO in one and actually fly one of the last " ships " to them. Hell one of these could be his old plane.

The Vodoo, the Banshee, the Phantom. All American fighters are really attack aircraft. They are fat because they carry fuel.
@surfboy3445 жыл бұрын
I know it was a great historical plane and did a fantastic job in the hands of the right pilots, but are they really that cheap that they're still flying these crates? These things are as old as those Russian fighters we blew up in Syria awhile ago.

Flying an F16 costs around $6000/hour. Sweedish Grippen $4000/hour. An F4 nowadays $16000+/hour and raising. Production line has stopped long time ago, no parts, so the only way keeping them in service is buy parts from previous users of they still have same in stock. Or by cannibalism, or...Chinese blueprints by reverse engineering I.e Iran
