I called it: tragic backstory. That dig at us in Part 2 about losing control and hurting people sounded way too personal, and that's because it was. But I'm glad we're starting to get answers to these questions about Ruby's past. I'm still curious about what that petition was, though. ...And what her connection is to Cal. ...and what Cal is "retaliating" over by joining hunters. ...and what specifically happened the first time she turned... But the fact that our hot tsundere werewolf girlfriend actually gets "princess" added to her list of descriptors is just amazing.

That's what I heard too. Ruby and Ethan are twins, so I don't think it was a matter of eligibility, though. My guess is Ruby was going to take her mother's place as alpha, but either chose not to or something happened that forced her to cede leadership to her brother. Perhaps something related to Cal?

I like the pace of the character development here, slowly chipping away at the shell in which she normally stays encased. Or...maybe it's more accurate to say that she's gradually opening the crack of the shell. (Anyone have a better metaphor for this? Please...?) And I'm still quite fascinated by the shapeshifting sound. Is that what the sound effect was originally meant to be? Is that directly from a desktop app for sound clips? Regardless, I'd say it does a horrifyingly good job of capturing the unpleasantness of the effect.

So, like...what happens to our clothes when we shift? Do they rip apart? That must be annoying, having to buy new clothes all the time. And what about when we shift back? Are we just out in the woods naked with our mentor? I guess there would have to be some degree of "we're going to see each other naked; get used to it," but if we have a crush on Ruby, that level of, erm...familiarity would be quite awkward. And probably quite difficult to hide now that I'm thinking about certain physiological processes. I suppose it wouldn't matter if we have a designated "shifting outfit" that stretches and adjusts to our new body, but I can't even begin to imagine how hard it would be to do wolf shit while wearing clothes meant to fit a human.

So my question is what happens to a person's clothes when they shift? because unless they get protected by the magic, someone would either run thru a lot of clothes, or have to be fine with a fair bit of casual nudity just before/after a shift.

Just want to say this out loud, I think she’s the actual alpha. That would explain at least in part why it doesn’t matter which of the twins was born first, because if it did, it’d be her. The reason she rejected the title is because she wants to leave. I can’t really wrap my head around her relationship with Cal, so I’ll leave that to the other commenters/listeners
