I think the reason why NXT has a much older fan base is because it reminds them of that old school studio wrasslin style of the 70’s and 80’s, which Hunter grew up on watching and being a big fan of the likes of Harley Race, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes and Billy Graham. And I think the reason why AEW has a much younger fan base is because they are trying to appeal to that modern Indy/ROH/PWG fan. Now the fans that feel left out in all of this are the lapsed fans that were watching WWE during the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression Era’s, those fans cant get into NXT or AEW because what they want is larger than life stars like an Austin and Rock, as well as big storylines. Imo the 2 biggest problems WWE have right now is the constant micromanaging by Vince, and a severe lack of mainstream stars that can draw a large audience, which is all WWE’s fault for not making any new mainstream stars.

The wrasslin' style of the 70s and 80s is a far cry from what is presented on NXT. Those lapsed fans that you speak of are lapsed because WWE became complacent over the past 19 years without any real competition. The attitude era also happened in a different era in history when people didn't think too much about every single thing that was spoken or done on screen. WWE can't do a similar product simply because of today's PC world that we live in along with all the SJWs who get offended by everything. Then there's all the internet smarks who constantly scrutinize every single move that wrestling companies make like when someone gets too much exposure, then he/she gets turned against, or even real life issues being incorporated into storylines then people start crying over that too when the reality is that it has been happening in wrestling for decades with the only difference being that people today are smarks on the internet and know the true story when they didn't know 15-20+ years ago. Wrestling is in a no-win situation in today's world.

WWE is a complete mess. I don't blame Heyman for that; I won't even blame Prichard for that. The current issues with the two main brands all fall at Vince's feet. He's the one forcing rewrites up until airtime. He's the one squirreling on every new talent that's called up or brought in. He's the one who's killing pushes before they take off. HHH has retreated back to NXT exclusively and has thus signaled that indie darlings are better off sticking to the indies or going to AEW. He's not the guy in Vince's ear anymore, and that's clear to anyone. Ratings are down in part due to COVID-19, but primarily due to the roster cuts they made in April and the ongoing turmoil over the creative direction. Morale in the locker room is at an all-time low; high-profile alumni like The Rock and John Cena are nowhere in sight; those who are available to make special appearances aren't drawing higher ratings. Vince needs to go.

NXT's potential for success is capped by the greater success of WWE as a whole. The WWE as a whole currently isn't successful enough for its "enhancement talent" third show NXT to beat AEW. As for creating stars, that is a real issue. HHH hasn't produced any real breakout talent, when you'd expect him to by now have found someone. He's shown less success than even the typical mindless WWE approach. Though anyone that showed breakout potential would be poached for (being buried) on Raw or Smackdown anyway.

@@DayFul Russo has been toxic in the business since 1999. He put WCW out of business. He fucking near put TNA/Impact out of business on multiple occasions. He is the reason why TNA got booted off of Spike TV despite being the network's highest rated show at the time, over even the UFC. As senile as Vince is, there is zero chance he would ever even consider hiring Russo back.

Interesting discussion on HHH and one I can't disagree with. It's odd that Vince of all people...appears to be more in touch with a 'younger' audience than HHH. Who knew? That's not to say we need to keep Vince in charge...not at all...but people who think HHH is the answer have another thing coming based on the facts as we know them. I think its important to point out that HHH also lacks the experience of working with stagnant talent. The nature of NXT is that these are young people who get their story told up until their title loss and then its up to the main roster (in a lot of cases). HHH has very little experience working with the aftermath. Meanwhile the reality of main roster is that you are ALWAYS dealing with the aftermath because most of your roster has been here for 5+ years and have won and lost dozens of feuds/titles.

I wouldn’t say that Vince is more in touch with the younger audience cause that’s not true. WWE is only being sustained now by the older fans who watched back in the 80’s and 90’s. The younger fans are watching AEW. HHH’s problem is he’s good at molding developmental talent. However, NXT doesn’t have developmental talent anymore. It’s mostly just TNA & ROH castoffs.

I hate to think what this is going to mean for people like Aleister, Liv, Shayna who are never gonna be pushed or backed by Bruce like how heyman would have

Heyman can't make a good WWE program in this era because the programming direction is garbage child friendly gratitude era bullshit. I'm 28 and I've been watching wrestling for 20 years and I basically want attitude era entertainment programming with adult friendly jokes and themes, mixed in with the modern more highly respected women's wrestling, athletic men's wrestling (AJ Styles, Kenny Omega) and no models bikini wrestling. It needs to be more over the top with personalities that are larger than life. AEW is the closest to that right now because at least they can call each other bitch etc, because in a real life conflict you would obviously swear when trash talking. Kenny putting Moxleys through a glass table, Cody breaking into the stadium box by smashing the glass to beat up Jericho, etc. More of that please. If I'm not engaged by must see programming I'm not watching, and WWE hasn't been must see for more than a decade, besides NXT Takeover. Jericho wearing the Jerichoholics shirt whilst on stage with Rock making fun of Stephanie's boob job back in 2001 is a prime example of a classic segment that they wouldn't touch anymore - alcohol themed merch, and the inference of adult themes with Stephanie in that example, but it had the crowd rocking. Their commentary teams are terrible as well. You've got a bunch of Michael Cole clones and Michael Cole isn't an adored commentator to begin with

WWE doesn't need two seperate rosters anymore. We need the 1999-2000 RAW and Smackdown(!) because the roster is much smaller, the star level is lower, and the need isn't there. They haven't just bought out WCW and ECW and been flooded with new talent, and they have NXT as a place to keep the lower level talent (And hopefully Nia Jax). Why have two weak rosters on separate shows when you can have one roster and have more talent at hand. Story lines can be between both shows, which speeds up things by having us see the plot twice a week, and by the time a pay per view comes by, you get the same amount of storyline time as in two months. And we know we don't like the storylines dragged out over months (Reigns/Corbin, Rusev/Lashley).
