What if one decision could shape the future of space exploration? The FAA’s updated environmental assessment for SpaceX’s Starship launches might be that moment, paving the way for up to 25 launches annually from Texas. But this decision comes amid whispers of political influence, technological challenges, and ambitions that could redefine humanity's presence in space. Is this a turning point for innovation, or are we witnessing the quiet hand of politics steering the stars? Let’s break down the latest developments in the Starship saga and what they could mean for the future of space travel. Q: What are your thoughts? Shy? I assume someone will lay some fibre (optics) from both of the two towers back up the road to the control area. Could probably have a small connectivity antenna on that line before the fibre leaves the launch area? (for backup purposes). Should probably run a line or two (all underground) to the other testing area too....

Hi JC, Thank you for all your informative videos! I was very peeved when Elon increased the monthly fee for the Starlink Roam service. Why do you think he did that? As his service goes from strength to strength, do you foresee a monthly fee drop? Thanks, Peter
@jimmanley7153Ай бұрын
The roaming fee covers the increased administrative effort of keeping track of where roaming terminals are at any given time, and elevated access prioritization guaranteed above stationary users.
@pgw1977Ай бұрын
@ As I understand it stationary user’s are, and always have been prioritized over roamers. And as for keeping track of roamers being an extra admin’ cost, I think we both know what bs that is!
@professorg8383Ай бұрын
You've read a great deal into this development that isn't there yet. So for one, it's not really an FAA issue. They have to follow the law that states that SpaceX and any others must be in compliance with environmental regulations. All this draft statement really amounts to is a plan to help determine compliance. Regardless of getting an extra Republican member, the FAA is still obligated to follow the law. As for your analysis of "party bias", you're somewhat right. Democrats are considerate of the environment and Republicans don't give a crap about it. But following the law is not a matter of a politically biased vote of the FAA management members. I have no doubt that Trump intends to destroy the EPA, but that doesn't change the laws. He may try to change the laws too, but that would need to get through Congress. But it is not, and never was an FAA issue. They just issue the license according to the laws. As for Trump being a space enthusiast, that's a stretch! He's a billionaire enthusiast as long as they support him. Now if Musk comes up with a plan to deport immigrants into space using the giant Pez dispenser, then he might have something! . The one little flaw in his mass deportation plan is that the country you are deporting to, needs to be in agreement! They could probably just push them out the back of a C-17, but it's liable to create an international incident. So the alternative they are looking at is concentration camps. But spitting them out into space could be better and Musk would appreciate another government contract! And who knows, maybe Mars could become the new Liberia!! Might be easier than trying to get volunteers for the early testing! But I digress, Even of everything you anticipate comes to pass quickly, it will take some time to get many of the version 3s into orbit. These beasts are big and heavy. Considering they haven't even gotten a Starship into low Earth orbit yet, I think it's a bit early to be very optimistic. Version 3s are about twice as heavy as the V2 minis they currently launch. I don't believe they actually have any V3s in orbit yet. So assuming there are no delays, it's going to be a while before many of these are in orbit. So there's a lot of unknowns to be as optimistic as you suggest. As for your statement that they now have FAA approval, that's an enormous overstatement! The Center for Biological Diversity and local environmental groups have sued the FAA for failing to conduct an adequate environmental impact statement before allowing SpaceX to launch Starship even once from the site. All that has really happened is the FAA has a draft of a new environmental impact statement that includes 4 public meetings on the topic. Those should be pretty interesting meetings. Jared Margolis, a senior lawyer leading the suit says "We're not afraid of confronting the Trump administration," Margolis says. "We're not afraid of making sure that environmental laws are being complied with. That's what we do." Funny thing about when issues like this get to the courts, we find that the public is far from MAGA enthusiastic. Trump has a lousy record for winning in the courts despite how he might spin it!! Trump's so called mandate, is very far from it. Musk's favorability ratings are in the toilet. Although now ideologically polarized , he is only favorable with Republicans' and is now overall negatively rated. History would suggest that is indicative of big losses in the courts. The key here is to understand that this is not an FAA bureaucratic issue, but an environmental issue.

Good video. I’m surprised how fast Starlink keeps hitting maximum user usage. I’m guessing that getting an even 10X user increase will not be enough for the long term. I’m curious with the space launches taking place how can Starlink satellites be sure they won’t be in the way of a launch. With Starlink trying to offer the world direct to phone service, it seems to me Starlink will never be able to cover the world’s population… what is the maximum users that Starlink can serve? Is this known?
@jimmanley7153Ай бұрын
The Starlink satellites are thousands of miles from each other, in a number of concentric circular orbital “shells”, so they don’t have to worry about them hitting each other or anything running into them. There is a shared international government database that keeps track of everything in orbit, fed by launch providers and highly-precise military radars that are accurate down to under a meter in orbital ephemeris data (position, velocity, eccentricity, angle of inclination, etc., all in 3-D coordinates). Software uses the data to predict safe launch window times based on launch latitude and longitude, velocity profile (3-D speed and angular acceleration, intended orbital parameters, reentry mass and drag characteristics if the launch fails, and so forth), etc.
