FYI: The budget friendly pencils from FC are called “Classic”, which are written on the pencils and are marketed for children. And as mentioned by other viewers, the “Goldfaber” is FCs version of a wax pencil. In my opinion, the Classic’s are an excellent beginner pencil, not too hard, exposes users to a more natural color range, and teaches users to incorporate layering which is what is needed to use Polychromos.

I have all three and I they all work differently and have their qualities. But I do love the Classics because they are different from any other pencils I known, and I have like all the good brands. They are extremely sturdy, a bit harder but super smooth to work with and give you more subtle and natural looking colours. I must admit I always have 2 backup boxes because I don't trust that such a product with great value for money will forever be available. Art supply hoarders will understand 😊

A more accurate description is Budget/kids, Student, Artist, since that is how they are designated usually. Also the numbers are for manufacturing color ID, not to number the pencils in a set. That color ID matches across all Faber Castell products.

I'm so glad I found your video! I recently tried comparing same number colors between my sets of Polychromos and Goldfaber, because I heard that they colormatch but found that they're not the same. I thought one of them was fake or something. So relieved now that it's not just me. 😂 That claim I heard was probably just for within each series I actually quite like Goldfaber, but I agree their normal price is too expensive (I got mine for cheaper than usual).

Did you sharpen thee pencils to remove factory applied spray before swatching ? Your results can be very different if you do this first. Even with top of the line

Thank you for this great comparison. I like the polychromos a lot, they are a little thicker than the others and has a round barrel (what I really prefer). LG Judith

I love Goldfaber pencils for fine detail.

I only have the Goldfabers and Classics and I find the Goldfabers to be a bit blotchy. The classics will cover an area much smoother. I tend to use the classics way more than the goldfaber.

The Goldfaber are wax pencils so they react differently than the oil pencils.
