fun fact, you don't need to input the negative symbol on output knob. Fab filter made it this was seeing as the only direction the knob can go is down. Just to save an extra key-press!

When I run professional songs through the Pro L2 there is zero redlining up top, yet the master is loud and hitting between -5 and -8 LUFS. Are you able to explain how they achieve this?
@sleepinghope3644 жыл бұрын
4:06 Normaly when you have channels linked is more for mono and when you like and want to preserve the stereo image that you gave but sometimes there are things that are really paned and you can have something that is too loud in one channel but the limiter if it's 100% linked willl turn down the same amount for bouth channels making the other channel that was not as loud really quiet, and this can heppen in the transients or in the sustained parts ''thats why there is the release linking that it affects the things that pass through the release stage of the limiter ''in short, the things that are beeing compresed in the release stage''. So if yo have the case that you have things reallly hard or nearly hard panned to one channel and you don't want this voolume change you can unlink them a bit like 65-80% to preserve a little bit of the volume. that's why the transient stage is a bit turned down. Sorry im not native english i hope everything is more understandable

Hello, great tutorial. What would you recommend as a ball park figure to aim for with gain reduction? Anything below -3.5 or just above? Plus i cannot seem to get the LUFs to meet the level I want by using the gain slider, should i go back to the mix and sort the there?

Great job !!! Thanks Question: Some say we should set the Output to neg 1 (-1.0) and others say neg.1 (-0.1) for Mastering level...which is correct (and why if you would). Thanks again, Steve
@samsmyers3 жыл бұрын
thanks! You would set your output to less than 0db to make sure that you aren't going above 0db true peak which may cause distortion when your digital signal is played through speakers (analogue signal). Because with the Pro-L2 you can activate the true peak limiting, that means that the limiter will make sure that you won't go above 0db true peak. Some limiters don't have the true peak limiting option and that is why you would lower the output more to something like -1db. With a true peak limiter you don't have to lower the output to lower than 0db, but I sometimes do like -0.1 just in case. You can use something like a Youlean Loudness meter to see whether you are going above 0db true peak and use that to determine what level to set your output at.

@@samsmyers Not quite true, especially when master for streaming platforms. Most streaming platform like Spotify, KZbin, SoundCloud, etc. require a true peak level of -1 dBTP (not 0 dBTP) for all uploaded files. Be very careful when mastering music for those platforms.

Hi Sam, thanks for the great tutorial! I didn't get one thing though: the 1:1 setting on the output, how is this setting useful and what for is it 🤔? @ 8:04 and does that affect the output signal 🤔
@samsmyers3 жыл бұрын
thanks! when you increase the gain on the limiter, it makes your song louder. The 1:1 doesn't make your song louder. It is a "gain match" so it doesn't increase your gain. This is useful to see what the limiter is doing to your sound, and can help you hear what is distorting (if anything)

The goddamn "output level" actually changes the overall volume of the sound... I didn't know that until today and it fucking PISSES me off. So if you want to use this thing to catch peaks on something at -9 bd or so... IT CAN'T... it will just turn down the volume of the whole track 9db so not only will you never hit -9 db.... the quietest part will be 9 db quieter as well... WTF ???????
