Cannavaro for me is one of the best defenders of all time. His performance against Holland at euro 2000 was incredible. He literally shut down EVERY TOP PLAYER. Messi, r9, Henry, berkhamp, kluivert, Ronaldinho, zidane, sheva, torres, totti, del piero, inzaghi, amongst many more. His performances against Holland 2000, and Germany/France 2006 was the best performance I’ve seen from a defender.

People always said he flopped at Madrid, but think about it. This guy played along side Ramos,Helguera and Carlos which was a hardest job at that time. Ramos wasn't yet a good defender, well...you know about Helguera and Carlos was more offensive defender. Cannavaro was excellent defender for football of 20 years ago. I'm afraid that by today's standards he would be considered too rough and a lot of his contacts would be considered as fouls and earn him extra yellow cards. I am particularly convinced about that after that penalty kick for England against Nederlands at 2024 EURO semi-finals.

Now people here is the evidence when people say R9 was untouchable well it's not always the case because the amount of times he was stopped by cannavro is unbelievable. Please do not get me wrong r9 is probably the greatest striker ever but you to have remember defenders are there to stop counter attacks from strikers like Ronaldo which is a very difficult task, considering Ronaldo's electric pace , skills and power the Italian defender's know when to take him out of his stride by making artful tackles and challenges.
