Cheryl Berenice Yoke Shim It really is perfect and she makes it look so effortless. Whoever did her floor choreography and helped her pick her music for here and the 2008 Olympics did a fantastic job and capitalized on her exceptional elegance. Her coaches however failed her because they didn't construct decent enough bars routines for her to medal. If you look at all of her scores at both Olympics, she would have easily medaled if the coaches would have done a better job. Sure, everyone can have a weak event, but that is when an excellent coach will construct a routine, and in this case a bars routine, with elements that she could have mastered. They knew for years what her current bars routines would score approximately and that simply was never enough. In this case, I believe the weakness was on the coaching staff and not the gymnast where there main focus should have been figuring out a creative bars routine for her. She was an exceptional gymnast and unfortunately didn't get the amount of medals she should have in her career.

The issue here was that triple turn- she hopped just before completing it and it was downgraded to a double- which lowered her start value… that was the difference. Can’t blame anyone when a dance element- in a code that focused on them- wasn’t completely done.

And she probably deserved the gold in floor in Beijing 2008.
@saragrant9749
@saragrant9749 Жыл бұрын
@@akawhippynot even close unfortunately. Her start value was substantially too low for a gold there- only four tumbling passes and dance elements that just weren’t worth enough in points. That Russian coaching squad in 2008 did not take advantage of the code and it cost them in several places.

I've only just realised her second pass is a whip + triple twist instead of just a triple twist which makes me even more mad that she only scored 9.612 here. Robbed! Completely! She had the most consistent execution of anyone in the competition, but got consistently underscored on every event. She only scored 0.05 higher than Carly even though Carly went oob, then she scores lower than Zhang Nan on beam, even though she had much better execution, and somehow scores lower than Zhang Nan when she had a much more difficult dismount?? Her floor is also worthy of a 9.65 at least.
@poshbo
@poshbo 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately she mad a visible error when attempting the triple turn into front support. You see her back foot clearly stumble backwards before all three turns were completed so that element (D at the time and worth 0.1 bonus to her start value) likely wasn't paid and she didn't have a full 10 start value

The issue was two fold- bars were only a 9.8 SV, and weren’t performed to her utmost. Here was the main difference though- she had a couple of dance elements that weren’t completed, and in that code it was hugely costly.

If the code of that time hadn’t focused so exclusively on absolute perfection on dance elements, she likely would have gotten a medal- what color between silver and bronze is hard to say. When she did that triple turn she made an error… and that was the difference maker. It’s what I didn’t like about that code. In finals your gold medal went to great dance and absolutely abismal sloppy tumbling, while another with superb tumbling but slightly different dance was left out in the cold.

The judges followed the rules given at the time by that code of points. If you want to blame something- blame that ridiculous code that focused almost exclusively on dance.

Boycott is an incorrect term. She was never boycotted, she just never completely took advantage of either code of points. Here, dance was critical and she made a very visible error. In both, bars was a huge weakness and that doesn’t fly in the AA final.

Unfortunately Svetlana had an edge in start value- across the board in the end. She had 0.1 on vault, 0.2 on bars, nothing on beam and initially nothing on floor- until Anna missed the completion of the triple turn. It was a beautiful routine. I'm no expert, but I see her downscored .025v, .08bars, .05beam, and .033f. This would have tied her with khorkina; the scores were that close. Pavlova was in the top 3 in 3/4 apparatus AA at this olympics. Pavlova is one of my favorite gymnasts. Go to her website and see how she much competes and in how many events; she doesn't shy from competition and is one of the most dedicated gymnasts.

For everyone insisting she was robbed, here’s the biggest thing- in 2004 dance elements were highly influential in the score (just look at the sloppy routine that won GOLD in floor final). She may have beautiful dance, but the elements were often not done to a completion the code required and therefore cost her points. In 2008 her bars were unbelievably weak- in a code that rewarded strong bar work. The best gymnasts, those who DO medal are the ones who understand every aspect of the code they are given and work to build the strongest program. Anna DID NOT- and that’s why she never got an AA medal, period.

@slamballmanlita I understand that completely. But, the commentators are supposed to be commenting the gymnast being shown, not the gymnast that has yet to compete or has already competed (or currently competing, like Patterson during Pavlova's routine). Even BBC has a slight bias, now that multiple British gymnasts, other than Tweddle, are actually doing well in competition. I guess unbiased media is extremely difficult to come by these days.

No, the triple was downgraded to a double and I believe cost 0.1 in SV- or something like that. That code left no room for dance elements being even slightly incomplete. The difference- and why she didn’t medal over Zhang- was bars. 10.0 vs 9.8 SV is a critical difference.
