I'm so excited that you want to make something inspired by Downton! I had a favorite store go out of business a few months ago and on the last day open I picked up some of the fabrics for a cosplay I want to make. It is the teal pant outfit that Sybil wears at the end of the first season.

It is shocking to hear how cheap are fabrics, trims and buttons in America! Here in Italy, even if we cannot complain about the quality, in most of the shops you will end up spending 3-4 times those prices and sometimes choices are limited because we don't have garment districts or huge craft strore like Joann's. Resources like Esty are vital for costumers and vintage sewing lovers. Your Etsy review will be really welcomed, if you ask me! I cannot wait to see your future creations for 2016!

+Sarah Longshore Thank you! I definitely will. I'm thinking of pairing them with the black/white 1890s ensemble - the hat can be a pop of color with purple decorations! That's a good idea. I've always wanted to learn how to make fabric flowers and they would suit that project nicely!

I'm so happy you keep on doing these haul videos! I love them! I like your earlier period dresses, but like the 19th century has one of the prettiest dresses in my opinion, so I'm really happy that you decided to tackle some. Can't wait to see the results, especially of that cape and the taffeta dress~ And the flapper dress sounds amazing, I feel like it will suit you a lot because of your long legs. What I would like to know, how much time you spend choosing and buying all those fabrics and beads, because of all the effort you put into finding the right ones.
@AngelaClaytonCostumery
@AngelaClaytonCostumery 8 жыл бұрын
+WolkeYume I'm so glad you like them! I usually spend about six hours shopping per a trip (including train times it's 8am-6pm!). It's become more time consuming as I make bigger "ensembles" where all the fabrics need to coordinate. But it's a lot of fun too! :)

Hooray! I've been waiting for this. The black beaded lace is very Lady Mary and the peach is so Lady Edith. You might want to review the Downton fabric collection by Andover. It's cottons, quilting weight, but might give you some ideas and inspiration. I'm making Duchess and Lady Mary quilts from the lines. I hope you do an Etsy Haul episode. Thank you for sharing this. It's exciting to hear a little of the plan and your goals. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

+Melanie Varela Weirdly enough all the evening gowns on the show that I love are worn by Cora! I think hers are a bit more "dated" which I tend to favor. But Edith and Mary have beautiful casual wear...those tailored suits and silk blouses are stunning! That's interesting about the quilting line of materials - i'll have to look into them!

Oh my gosh, weren't the dresses from Crimson Peak amazing?!!! They were so incredibly gorgeous, I was almost distracted from focusing on the movie! I hope that designer wins an Oscar for that movie. For that fabric with the water damage: could you dye the whole thing a darker color, like a deep plum or indigo? Silk usually takes dye really beautifully. And yes, please do an etsy haul/seller review. That would be awesome!
@chelsiemalfoy
@chelsiemalfoy 8 жыл бұрын
Maybe it was the lighting in the store, it tricked your eyes so you couldn't see the stain. I don't know if it's really your style but maybe you can use the damaged fabric to your advantage and make a more darkly inclined dress out of it. Something that is meant to be distressed.

I'm so happy. You will be doing my favorite era in design. That stained silk is a pity. It's so light. Can you use a lace overlay on the stained area or maybe get it dyed? The coral lace with beading might look hand done if you cut and overlay it like lace applique. I wondered where you were, it make sense. Shopping in N.Y. And as for the expensive buttons, the metal buttons you displayed look hand designed, cast and polished. It explains the cost. They are truly lovely. It would be a pity for them to be cheap, so they are worth it. Remember, cast buttons in the Victorian and Edwardian age were never for closure, only decoration. I am going to have so much fun watching you do this. Of course not as much as you.
@AngelaClaytonCostumery
@AngelaClaytonCostumery 8 жыл бұрын
+Penney Burgess I'm going to try and hide it in the back of the dress - I think washing it will remove some of the staining, and the english net overlay should hide the color difference pretty well. It's more an issue that the narrowness of unstained silk prevents me from cutting out the skirt panels the way I had planned. But i'll try to figure out something! I think the buttons were worth the price considering the quality (the shank of them is especially nice the way it's cast), but i'd still rather spend more on fabric and purchase cheaper buttons. I'd never heard that about buttons before! A few of my favorites from that period appear to have metal functional buttons (that open to reveal a hook/eye closure...but still!) even though dorset and embroidered buttons were more popular. I'm using them mostly for decorative purpose on this piece, so I should be good.

I highly recommend that you search through asain dress stores, as a 'sari' is 9yards of material, and you can get a lot of lace styles like the ones your showed form $20. even though its a dress itself, you can still use it as the base material, especially if you want chiffon, net and silks

Is there anyway you could make a prom dress? Not like the typical ones but something lovely and different from the usual. I love the dresses with the flowers in the hem or bottom! I have been saying I want a dress with patterns on it or with colors but not just colorful, something with beautiful accents. My mom showed me your dresses and they are captivating!

+Tamara Palaganas Just what I was going to suggest. The first thing I'd do is take a few inches of the fabric and soak it, then dry it to see if the color evens out and the water discoloration disappears. But if stain persists, test dye the swatch.

Iulia Diana Marian i'm from India. here fabric prices are crazy cheap. the poly tafetta fabric which she bought for 4$ wouldnt cost more than a dollar here. i buy a lot of good quality fabric for less than a dollar/yard. I cant imagine how much they must cost you in europian countries 😲. especially pure silk. my cousin studied fashion design in london school of fashion and she said that some fabrics there cost her 10 times more than they would cost in India.

Kitta12320 gosh this sounds amazing. I don't know about other countries, but in my country the fabrics are incredibly expensive. people usually have 2000-3000 lei salaries, and to get brocade or silk or anything that is not basic cotton (which is also crazy expensive) you have to fork out a lot of money (70-80 a metre). compared to the salaries, that is really expensive. I'm just starting out, so I bought a lot of stuff with the holiday discounts and planning on not buying anything more the next 3 months at least. I envy you so much!
