I keep a small needle book, my thimble, a small pair of scissors, needle threader and thread in an eyeglass case. The hard sides protect from sharp pointed scissors having me. The needles and pins can’t poke me and it is compact.

After my children grew up and moved out, and them my husband died, I had the freedom to create a dedicated sewing room. Then the "extra" bedrooms became storage areas for fabric. If I ever build a custom house, I'll start by planning the very large sewing area so everything can be in one space :).

I have two ways that I store my rulers. One - I have a peg board that my husband hung for me and then I purchased the hooks and hung all my special rulers and templates I hang they there. Then My door to my sewing room opens into the room. Behind the door I have hung all of my Quilters Select rulers with the front side against the wall. I have jars that I place my thread into and all of my needles and pins are in a Tennessee shaped basket, where I grew up, all of them are placed in there top up so that they are easily found. I have two shelves that some of my fabric placed on there and then any other fabric is placed in baskets! I am color blind and when my daughter comes home, they live about 3 hours away, she will place all of my fabrics according to colors/hues and labels my shelves. Makes life so very easy!!

One thing I do with all of my quilt books, if I take them to my local office supply and have them put the spiral binding on them. Then they will lay flat, you’re not fighting with a book to stay open. And a bonus they put clear protective covers on both the front and the back. Very inexpensive way to save your Quilt books

You girls are a breath of fresh air, I love the Fabric Cafe videos. Thanks for all of the great hints! I use my empty pill containers with lids to store my old sewing needles, and bent straight pins. I too store my patterns in three ring binders. I used to store them folded in a box, but it ended up that the patterns would get torn eventually and digging through them was no picnic. I do love the idea of rolling the 3 yard quilt fabrics together. Not only do they look great like that, but they would make great gifts for sewing friends. Maybe add a ribbon or so.

I am so impressed with your quilting *methods, practices and philosophy,* and, now, even methods of storage and organizing one's quilting world…: because quilting can become one’s world (outside of family and my law practice, part time now)! I’m going to revamp my whole quilting world according to your Quilting Methods, Practices and *Tenets!* It's obvious a lot of thought and hard work have gone into the quilting processes you have created and engineered. It works and it makes so much sense! (I’m already visualizing the transformation of my quilting world in my brain/head. I can’t do it all at once, I will do one shelf at a time… And eventually, it will be organized and beautiful like your quilting studio! My quilting studio is every part of my home save the master bedroom, bathrooms and kitchen! And, that's *how it is!,* friends and family just have to *accept it!* I came by it rather late in life--and, I won't apologize that it so comsumes me. Now, with your suggestions, I can *tame it,* but still have it!) Thank you!

About 20 years ago I bought 1 roll of a thick, clear plastic "tape" that sticks to itself (no adhesive). FOR THREAD - Among many other uses, I cut small "tape" strips & use these to quickly wrap around spools of thread and bobbins to prevent unraveling. Because the tape is clear, I can still see the exact color of thread. I store my thread in clear plastic containers meant for matchbox cars (compartments for 48 cars, box is 10" x 13" x 3.5", once $5 & now $50+ at Walmart, but Amazon has one for $30), The boxes have handles & have hinged lids on the 2 flat sides to access the compartments; each compartment will hold 2 small spools of sewing thread, or 1 regular + 1 small, or 1 larger spool, like specialty threads, & probably 3-4 thin spools like Gutermann. I have 2 of these boxes in a 7" deep drawer. I love that my thread spools are stored sideways, so I can see thread colors through the lid (grouped by color), the thread never gets dusty, plus grab & go convenience. The "adhesive" strips also cling to the inside of the container covers, so I keep extras there, cut and ready. The tape comes in various widths. I have used it to hold fabric/batting rolls together, hold bins shut, etc and I still have a lot left. (It's reusable, so I may never run out!) I once had to transport several hundred mini cream puffs cross-country, and kept them safe in an "under-bed" plastic storage box held shut by this tape! Here's a link to something that looks like the same stuff - "Hugo's Amazing Tape". www.amazon.com/Amazing-Wrap-Non-Adhesive-Reusable-Meters/dp/B07DRX1C2P toy car boxes - on Amazon www.amazon.com/dp/B09MQDSS1F/ref=twister_B09MQDDF3Y?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

After the last child left I never bothered to change the paint on the walls or remove the graffiti. Now I have a fresh coat of paint on ceiling and walls. He's going to give my cutting table a make over and add shelves. My fabric had been organized by yardage style... fat 1/4ths, 1/8ths, 1/2 yards etc. Now all I need to do is get my UFOs off the design wall and completed. I may even be getting a custom sewing table and golden triangle. I can't wait. Will send pics when done.

I put Command hooks along the top of one side and the back of the table (the right side of the table is against a wall, so I have access to three sides), and that's where I hang my rulers. They are out of the way and handy to grab (got this idea from a quilting magazine.) I loved this video. Lots of great organizing tips. I am always surprised by the number of people who like to keep everything out on a shelf . I had a lovely thread holder right out on a shelf beside my machine. It worked great except that all of the thread I did not use very often got covered in dust. I have since started storing all my thread on golf tees (extra long ones) pushed through the holes of a piece peg Fitted into the bottom of a cabinet drawer. They are still handy beside me but never dusty. I saw this on Pintrest. I store all my fabric in 2 old dressers Fold neatly just like Fran said and sorted by colour. They stay out of the sun and protected from dust.
@denisewarrick44612 жыл бұрын
Edit: The extra long golf tees are long enough to store the matching bobbin on top of the spool of thread. I also cut clear plastic tubing from the plumbing supply dept. into rings the same width as a bobbin. Then I cut the ring open and fit it around the bobbin. It keeps the threads from tangling and you can still see the colour of the thread.

Two additional items I use when organizing my small sewing needs when I move about are an old plastic medicine container and pieces of cork. Both come in so many convenient little sizes. With plastic medicine bottles, ones with a soft plastic pop on top you make a small slit or hole in the cap so I can safely dispose of used or broken needles. I also carry pieces of cork that I collect from bottles of all sorts. What great ideas! I'm not a quilter, but am embarking on some clothing upcycling, and I love your tidy fabric storage/grouping ideas ❤️! 🔹My tip for stacking box storage (also works for clear plastic drawers) is to print bold-font labels on ordinary printer paper and tuck them just inside the front-facing side, secure with a tiny bit of clear tape...nice for uniform aesthetics and vision challenges, very easy to change out. 🔹 My tips for a travel sewing kit - similar to yours; try a multi-clear-compartment folding toiletry or jewelry roll, ideally with a hook, make sure your seam ripper and scissors have tip protectors. Easy to put into checked baggage, with room for special items (in the most recent use, plastic curtain rings to revamp curtains from faux to functioning). It was so easy to pull out just the item I needed in the limited space I had for sewing at my destination 😁!

I use Command hooks to hang anything and everything in every room in the place; that way no holes in the walls or cupboard doors and is easily moveable. For example, hang the rulers on the edge of the sewing table or the back of the door. One note about placing printed label on the inside of the plastic covered binders; the ink will wear into the plastic and ruin it so you won't be able to change and reuse for another subject. I use comic boards to fold/store fabric, but I do like the idea of storing fabric rolled but not sure about the space baskets will take up. I'm thinking about those of us that have small spaces. I enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing.

My cutting table is a basic 6-foot folding table. I attached a piece of pegboard to the center panel on each side. Added larger size hooks, and use this to store extra, less used rulers and scissors/rotary cutters. Keeps them out of the way, but handy.

UNORGANIZED- notice in all caps!! I usually can find what I am looking for but it certainly is time wasted! Thank you for the thoughtful tips. I had a couple of “aha” moments. As always, enjoyed watching your video!

I also use medicine bottles to hold my bobbins. I fill my bobbins and place them in a bottle and label the top with the thread color/number.(6-8 bobbins). This gives me filled bobbins that I can just replace when one runs out in the middle of a project.

I have a pan lid rack hanging on my pegboard that I put my rulers in., It is easy access, and they stay really well. It does stick out a bit, but still works really well. I don't like hanging on a nail because I have to move them all to get to the one you need.

Often times the space behind your door is wasted in a craft room cause when the door is open you don't really see the space. I discovered that to be the perfect spot to hang all of my rulers. I hung nails according to the sizes of my rulers and put the ones that I use the most on the furthermost left side of the space and the ones that I don't use as often on the right-hand side of the space. They are spaced according to shape. It seems to protect them from hits and dings and they are easily found.
