Dye Discharge is a chemical paste designed to remove dye/color from fabric as a means of creating a design.
All dyes respond differently to the discharge process. Some fabrics loose all their color down to white, or cream; others turn beige, pink, blue, or do unexpected things. You have to be willing to test, play and explore, but the results can be dramatic.
I recommend starting with black and dark colors in cotton, silk, rayon, linen or blends of these fibers. Blends with polyester do not work well.
Apply a generous and even amount of discharge paste to the fabric. Allow the paste to air-dry completely, NOT in the drier. Once dry, press with a steam iron, using steam and moving the iron over the surface of the design. Keep pressing and steaming until the design emerges completely. A press cloth is optional. Rinse the discharged piece in water by hand, air-dry and press to remove wrinkles. Rinsing is necessary to remove the residual discharge paste which, over time, may continue to work on the fibers and may cause holes or disintegration.
