God, I was in high school in the mid 80's. I was a HUGE prep! Pleated plaid miniskirts, pink Izod alligator polo shirts, sweaters tied around my shoulders, velvet hairband, and I never went anywhere without my "Preppy Handbook" 😄 Got an after-school job at Micky D's just so I could buy a new preppy outfit each month. I LOVED those days ❤

I was in high school in the 70's and it was very preppy. I remember getting my initials embroidered on my wool crew neck sweaters. And I had many fairisle sweaters. Loved those. This video took me back to my youth. Forgot about a lot of the fashion. I had Tretorn shoes. Ralph Lauren polo shirts. Penny loafers. Head bands. etc.

I was a prep in the 80s. I was a teenager. My best look consisted of a pair of navy Bermuda shorts, a white Oxford shirt with a green navy striped sweater with a navy paisley bow tied at the neck, knee-high Argyle socks with my brown Sperrys. I even wanted to wear this outfit on Christmas when it was 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Dad made me go change. I was not wearing shorts with it so cold. I went to change into my wool plaid skirt and navy sweater-everything else remained the same. My dad was okay with that. There literally was no difference since my navy Bermuda shorts were corduroy.😂

The thing is preppy never really left. Preps are still around especially in the metropolitan southern cities. I think the lifestyle has shifted from the northeast to the south. Schools like UVA, UNC, UGA, seem to be more preppy and fratty, than the traditional ivy league schools in the northeast.

I was in college in the early 80’s. In the southeastern part of the US preppy was huge. Lots of navy, kelly green, pink, add-a-bead/pearl necklaces, belts with brass shell buckles with earrings to march, lots of sea creatures on clothes, Docksider shoes, Bass loafers, corduroy blazers, turtlenecks and button downs. Very androgynous! Where I went school what was popular for women was: a jean or cord skirt-not short, knee length or slightly above-it was cool to dress modest, knee socks, or tights, loafers, duck shoes and clogs. There’s more but the list could go on forever. I dressed somewhere in between. The simplicity of the style but not all the sea creatures and bright colors. I still like this style today.

80s Preppy? 80s, 90s, 00s, teens, NOW. Preppy handbook is still my go-to guidebook. Never fails. You forgot ANYTHING L.L. Bean in the US (just bought my 11th pair of L. L. Bean Blucher mocs, my daily casual shoe) . Natural fibers ONLY was the rule. The polo popped collar, and no socks thing were strictly a fad. Best line from the book re: clothes for men--"Basic style for man never changes because the man never changes. Elderly as a child, youthful as an adult, he is always a mixture of schoolboy and corporate president." The Official Preppy Handbook. Page 138.

You did not mention belts … ribbon belts and thin leather hair bands … and material and accessories were never the cheep polyester of that time but was cotton (not a blend), linen, leather, wool, silk and real gold/silver. Mostly natural fibers. Old school, conservative classic style. Now that I am in my 60’s I gravitate back to the basics with pops of interest to keep me modern. Platform loafers, blended fibers and pu leather. Liked your channel, you covered a lot. I will always be a preppy classic clothes follower.

A few key preppy items from the 80's era for midtown Toronto high schoolers: 1. Eddie Bauer goose down pullover ski jacket 2. Red and yellow socks with Bass weejuns or Sperry topsiders 3. Benetton rugby shirts 4. Vuarnet ski sunglasses 5. Roots leather vests (girls), motorcycle jackets (guys) 6. Roots Norwegian fisherman sweater (direct rip-off of the LL Bean classic) 7. Far West Gore-Tex pullover ski shell (red with blue stripe) 8. Beaver Canoe sweatshirts 9. Kettle Creek canvas pencil case Will add more if they come to me....

Preppies didn't wear logo merchandise, except for the alligator. Preppies wore Brooks Bothers button-down shirts, blazers, and tweed sports coats, as well as sack suits for school and later for work. Yale was key prep fashion. Madison Avenue was the hub of Preppy stores and styles. I stopped sox in 1963, but never Weejuns or boat shoes. You could not make a mistake at LL Bean in Maine.

I was in junior high and high school in the 80's and wanted a Lacoste polo shirt so badly to wear with my khaki shorts! We also wore rugby shirts with navy, kelly green, or red stripes. I remember carrying Liz Claiborne handbags which were popular. The rich high school girls carried Dooney & Bourke or Coach bags. I remember the cool girls wearing Tretorns specifically with the green logo. White Keds were also super popular.

I was cast as a preppy in the 80s. I guess because I just liked the look. Someone gave me The Preppy Handbook, which after hearing what it could be worth now, I wish I had kept it! I still love plaid and blazers and penny loafers and tights. I think for many who had not actually attended prep school, the clothes were worn with a wink and a nod. Fun and not to be taken too seriously. Thanks for posting this. It brought back some fun memories. 😊

I was a prepster in University in the early 80's. I proudly wore my red LLBean duckboots with Levi 501's, Ralph Lauren pinstriped button-down shirt but collar worn up, cable sweater over my shoulders, and a ribbon hair band. We would take off the Lacoste alligator from sweaters and sew it back on up-side down. The guys wore Ralph Lauren or Lacoste polo shirts in pinks and blues and yellows - often wearing two and collar up, with Rugby pants (i don't know what happened to those elastic waist cotton rugby pants) and boat shoes (preferably Sperry Top-siders, like they were going sailing at any time.

Yes, I was there - 80’s preppie, highschool in the early 80’s and then uni in late 80’s in Canada. My friends and I didn’t have a lot of money for the expensive “real” Ralph Lauren or Laura Ashley, etc, but there were many mass market brands doing similar looks. Key items for us were penny loafers (I went through several pairs, but never had Tretorns or similar - we didn’t really wear athletic shoes), white socks, white turtlenecks under our crew neck sweaters (for winter), Fair Isle patterned sweaters, tights (with skirts), kilts or plaid skirts, pleated skirts, pleated pants, cotton chinos, rugby shirts, and as you mentioned at the start polo shirts which we definitely turned the collars up on and did for a while layer two at a time (although it did seem that was more of a thing amongst the guy friends of our group). Also Pea Coats. Honestly, at an age when it’s hard to define one’s style, it really did make buying clothes and getting dressed a lot simpler. Once I got to uni though, I was in a big city and started to run into friends who’s style leaned toward more alternative and even slightly goth so a lot of black started to creep into my wardrobe. Even now though, a lot has stuck with me as I still like Pea Coats, tights with skirts, and turtlenecks under my sweaters in the winter (black ones now). A lot of J Crew defined the 80’s style of prep and even now still does and their quality for the price has probably helped this aesthetic last at least in North America.

In 80s Southern California "preppy" often overlapped with "surfer" and included Ocean Pacific shirts and flip flops. But it was still an exclusive identity. My parents weren't about to spend $30 on a Lacoste shirt for me, so I started hunting thrift stores for 50s and 60s clothes and just went punk. Now that I am older, I sometimes gravitate toward a preppy look because it's practical and classic. So nice that it's just a "look" now and available to everyone.
@hughesfamily1999

Yessss, Ocean Pacific, cute coordinating shorts and flip flops. ...and were you ever the "sometimes cut off sleeves and the ones that were the whole sides were cut out, where you would either wear an undershirt" Panama Jack shirts? Penny loafers with dress pants, corduroy pants but "my favorite" with Jeans. Remember the pale colored layering of Polo shirts that she did show within her video however it would not be like 7 of them but rather say...a pale blue and then a pale green one over top with the outer one collar popped up. Same way with the long sleeve buttoned up shirts, alot of Izod brand. A couple of layered short sleeve Polo's topped with an "unbuttoned" button up long sleeved. Also, remember Members Only Jackets? And then there was Keds white shoes matched with white cuffed socks. Jelly shoes....AND Jelly heels that white cuffed socks were worn with. Those normally being paired with pale layered color and sleeve cut out shirts and a mini shirt or shorts. Ofcourse I'm out of the Preppy look, but started recalling all of these styles in hopes that you too wore them as'well beings you mention the Ocean Pacific and flip flop style.

Ah...the preppy style days! College for me was bright corduroy pants - pink, lime green, red because they all go with NAVY BLUE. Turtleneck jerseys. You put your Fair Isle sweater over it (had to be wool...never acrylic!). You'd wear Topsiders, Navy Suede Clogs, LLBean Boots. Jeans were always straight leg, plain jeans. Other sweaters were a navy and white Birds Eye sweater, topped by a down vest. If you wore a skirt, it could be pleated, plaid - usually mid-calf length. There was no "Come Hither Schoolgirl look" that people seem to call preppy. No one that I knew in college ever dressed that way. Oxford Cloth button down shirts layered with a sweater, polo shirts. Navy blue wool pea coat - but not one from the Army-Navy store. More like from Brooks Brothers or Talbots. Another favored sweater (I had one in hot pink) was a wool cabled cardigan sweater that was kind of lacy. Very feminine with tiny crocheted buttons. Bermuda bag purse or a small Coach bag - and later Dooney & Bourke bags (but not the really huge ones). Dresses were Laura Ashley. A big 80s look for holidays or weddings were white stockings (slightly sheer) and black suede pumps. It was a thing. Holidays had plaid wool pants, taffeta plaid skirts, ruffled high neck white blouses. You layered everything. I grew up wearing more muted versions of this style (more pastel)...and I still favor classic clothes today. This style never veered into trendy. It can be called "old money" sometimes, I guess. The 80s made it brighter and more flashy, but the essence of the old money style is much more classic, reserved. Some might consider it boring, but you always have something "correct" to wear. You never look outlandish, or wrong. The conservative black (or preferably navy blue) dress with pearls or simple jewelry. You're good to go!

So, rethinking preppy style. As I said before I was in college during the 80’s preppy. I didn’t wear the colors, polos or some of the other preppy clothes. In researching preppy I came across “Ivy League” aesthetic- no I’m not Ivy League or rich- but I dressed and most of my friends dressed this way. Full on preppy was a little to cutesy for me. I’ve always leaned towards a more quiet minimalist style. Comparing the differences would be interesting.

Oh gosh, I remember some of those looks being worn by a few of my rich classmates (in the Netherlands btw). It was definitely a rich people thing over here. Most of us dressed in a more punk or new wave style , which was a lot more affordable. Needless to say the various different styles and opinions didn't mix well at school. It was fun to watch the video; although to me it brought back more of the fashion that was worn in American movies and series than the actual fashion in my area.

You folks forgot about the Ivy League days of the 1950s . You ignored the button-down oxford, rep and club ties, shetland wool sweaters. Scottish tweeds, Navy blue blazers, gray flannels, and cordovan-Weejuns with white sox, or no sox,1960s. The 1980s were a throwback to the actual preppy years. 1980s were a re-tred, a second coming. The 50s and 60s were inspired by actual garments favored by boys attending prominent prep academies in New England., where the Ivy League Colleges flourished.

Waited for you to mention the origin of the term. Prep school kids. Simple. It's how they dressed and what they wore.

Preppie meant someone who had gone to prestige private schools and universities. Ivies or the like. Cooler if you had gone to one and dropped out or better kicked out. It said one thing "I come from money" (even if you didn't.)and "I'm a classic wasp" Like most fashions it was nothing new, Hemingway and esp F Scott Fitzgerald, who came from rich families were preppies. . . one must be all cotton of course as any clothes of synthetic fabrics were considered declasse. . .social class of course was the major theme. Now (rightfully) verboten. Elite education was part of this and still is, Highbrow, middlebrow, lowbrow were terms cast about. . .see the book Class by literary critic Paul Fussell. The novelist John Updike was a major chronicler of people from these backgrounds and was himself a (Harvard) preppie. I once saw him shopping at Brooks Brothers in Boston, THE trade outlet for all preppies and wanna bees. Golf was the game and country clubs, golfers to this day wear preppie type clothes. It lasted about 10 years, then it was totally over. It survives at certain schools but it's not a thing. To this day I think khaki trousers, button down shirts and blazers is a great look for guys. The "pink and green" thing for girls just a bit too "virginal", though the girls of that day definitely weren't. There was a great skit on SNL back in the 80's when John Belushi was part of it. They had Ray Charles the blues guy on as guest host and the SNL cast came on as a hot new group "The Young Caucasians", just hilarious. You could probably find it on YT.

What do you want to know? You had to pop the collar in the 80’s. The 80’s were amazing. Not negative at all-the greed part is not correct. It was a time of hope. Yuppie was not really negative. Like being called a hipster today. Check out Raw Tea Party video., it not dirty an advert for an alcoholic beverage. That is the 80’s.
