Last year from Australia, I changed trains at Carlisle and also (again) travlled on the Settle-Carlisle while another day did a Glasgow - Euston Avanti WC trip. Track layout at Carlisle is sensational! Wonderful video with trains properly identified. Love the Black 5: along with GWR Castle class, my favourite British locos. Keep up the great work as I'll be back to Europe and UK later in 2023.

Excellent video per usual Les, the cold weather enhanced the experience, what brought back memories was the clanking of the motion, the last days of steam that sound was an every day occurrence, tell the owner the bearings need a fettle. Maybe you or your viewers can answer a question I have. My train spotting days were in the 50s and early 60s and I must have seen 100s if not 1000s of steam hauled trains leave a station platform without the pantomime we see today. We see the driver exhaust steam from the cylinders before starting, is this just grandstanding or do they know something the old BR driver was unaware of? Regards Ian.
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
Thanks! That black 5 is supposed to be fresh out of being worked on! The thing with opening the cylinder cocks before and during starting I think dates back a couple of years when a loco primed such that it achieved over 130mph without moving at Durham. I suspect an instruction from the railway inspectors has circulated in the past year.
@schoolshorts Жыл бұрын
Being at the northern end of the station I missed the "Here we go round the mulberry bush" manoeuvres at the southern end - though I did wonder why I kept hearing steam for so long. Some excellent footage and you did find rather less crowded spots than I did. Great stuff from the viaduct - you must have moved very smartly to get there on time.
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
Thanks Tim. What we didnt know at the south end was that the loco and support coach had detached, expecting the whole lot to head to Upperby. It was surprisingly crowded hence edits where people got in the way! I gave myself 20 minutes to get up to the bridge so as soon as the freight was through I legged it!

A4 4498 mallard and the 60103 flying scotsman are my most loved steam locomotives and my grandfather used to also work in the old Carlisle upperby 12b locomotive and maintenance sheds around 1960's and worked on the trains as well as being the fireman and signal man and guard and also quite a few other jobs as he grew more into his job, sadly he passed away at the age of 80 on the 26th of November 2022, just looked through his old railway books and photos and found a lot of photos of him working also some of his old badges as well as the 12b loco shed badge that he wore on his old railway coat and also found his British rail identity card with his photo and I'd number on it, wanted to also work on freight trains ever since I was a kid, me and my grandad would always talk about old trains and I know a lot about railway stuff as I'm 20 now, sadly I have epilepsy got diagnosed back in November of 2017 but if I ever get rid of it I'm going to try and get a railway job, usually play on train simulator world 3 driving old class diesel freight trains like the class 37, class 40, class 45, for the modern freight loco I'm always using the class 66, the class 68 and class 88 are also amazing cant use them on the game but I have seen them in real life and I love them.

Thats very interesting, your grandfather looks to have had quite a varied career - you wouldn't recognise Upperby now as the sheds are all gone. I admire your ambition.

@@LeslieGilpinRailways Thanks ❤❤❤ and I'm still in Carlisle, live up in currock just near hammond's pond, and I've been in the old loco sheds before they were demolished and also very recently I've seen that they have completely cleared all vegetation off the site, all the old rusty rails are showing again but the old engine sheds doorways are still standing, kinda is confusing me though that they are still up, would really love if network rail expanded their depot as where they are currently sat used to be where more sidings sat and the old roundhouse sat but I really hope they use the site for something to do with railways again.
