I’m so glad you took the advice of others and stayed far back. When I was working at our local zoo, the zookeepers never permitted anyone in their enclosure because our cassowaries kept trying to disembowel anyone who entered their enclosure. It took two keepers armed with full length police shields to do anything in there.

I am an Aussie from west of Sydney, Australia & seeing those huntsman spiders on your night trip was more than enough to tell me that visiting that far north is definitely not on my agenda!! I jumped watching the video, let alone to see them live!! I really can't stand them & hate it when one comes inside. They can grow the size of a man's hand & my son used to be a fencer years ago & many's the time he would have them come out when they were pulling down old wooden fences in the lower mountains & scare the daylights out of him. The other spider that is just as large is the bird spider & they are horrifying to see up close & personal. Down south of us we have tree funnel-webs which are definitely dangerous if they fall out of a tree & land in your clothes. I love bushwalking but I do NOT like spiders of any kind.

I watch a YT family in NSW. They are about an hour and a bit north of Sydney and they have shown us some large Huntsman spiders on their farm property. They are scary looking.

About 12 years ago I enjoyed a marvelous tour of Australia. While we were in the northeast area (Great Barrier Reef, rainforest) we stayed at the same lovely place you did. The private cabins were charming, and the open air dining room was very special. But to see cassowaries we had to wait for our visit to a reserve, where we were privileged to see two of them. Beautiful dino-birds-but those big feet and talons! Impressive, and a bit scary.

I've seen one in the wild, it ran across our path while driving along that road you were showing. Have also seen a couple in captivity, one of the wildlife sanctuaries actually allows people to feed them some fruit (through some pretty solid fences) which is an experience I won't soon forget! Beautiful dinos

Back in 1977 my wife and I stayed at Tambourine Mountain,south east Queensland. On a trail walk we came face to face with an adult cassowary!!!! It stood 1 metre away from us as we froze in terror. It then ran past us and disappeared into the rainforest. Wildlife experts say that isn't possible so far south of Daintree but we know what we saw!

Good move staying covered with long sleeves in the water. I don't know how prevalent the stingers are in that area, but getting stung would completely ruin your holiday, I read an article about North QLD stingers just yesterday.It honestly frightened me, I live in an inland city in SE NSW, and bluebottles are the worst maritime sting I've had. The tiny Irukandji jellyfish produces one of the most painful stings of all. Apparently the absolute agony lasts for weeks, and leaves victims very traumatized. Morphine does nothing for it.

All you had to do was go to Etty Bay near Innisfail about 1 hr south of Cairns. You probably would have seen chicks as well as adults. Cassowary’s are also called the gardeners of the rainforest. You can tell from his hair - notice its butt end is brown… not black … a juvenile/teenager.

Just catching up with a backlog of KZbin only to discover you were here back in October. You certainly packed a lot into the three so far posted and I'm looking forward to your rail trip from Cairns down to Brisbane and any other clips yet to be posted. I'm curious to see if you finally got down to my part of the world and found Downie Street in Melbourne. The Australian experiences you have shared so far are so indicative of the many hidden treasures many of my fellow Australians don't even know about. I'm not a golfer but the world's longest golf course video opened my eyes to a way of exploring the Nullarbor that many would be inspired to experience. And you have promoted a great relaxing experience of a sample of the outback and outback twitching with the Murray Trail Tour that I might be tempted to do myself as Renmark is within a day's drive from Melbourne. Wow! The day you experienced the Cassowary, the Daintree and the Barrier Reef I was on a day trip by rail from Melbourne to Maryborough and return, checking out updates to rail infrastructure and having a meal at the Station Cafe. I visited the Daintree once last century and am reminded of what a magical place it is. I certainly picked a great day to catch up on my backlog.......it's 26th January - Australia Day (for most of us anyway, but I won't go into that debate). Hope you enjoyed your visit and please come again if you can.🙂🙂🙂

Australia really is an amazing place. A continent that is isolated from the rest of the world which houses the deadliest versions of almost every major animal group on Earth. Deadliest reptile, saltwater crocodile. Deadliest land based snaked, Taipan. Deadliest bird, cassowary. It really is insane.

Saw one of these (full grown) in a zoo, and even then it was awesome. The only even larger animal we saw, was a big old croc that was massive, and apparently loved music. We missed out on seeing a wombat because they are crepuscular and it was sleeping away the day, though we did read about one being cared for because it’s mom was hit by a car and the zoo was hand rearing the poor fellow and keeping him in a special pouch.

Cassowaries are also found in New Guinea. I grew up in the New Guinea highlands and saw numerous dwarf cassowaries as a child. I've spent most of my adult life in southern Australia, where there are no cassowaries. We periodically holiday in northern Australia and I've only seen a cassowary in the wild once. It was a big one (way bigger than the ones in the New Guinea highlands), but we kept our distance and it showed no interest in us at all. We got a few good photos though. Huntsman spiders BTW are completely harmless. They give you a little nip, but you can barely feel it.

That was pretty damn cool, seeing a Cassowary in the rainforest. Congratulations Mike. Fairly few people have that experience. I know Rick isn't an old bird, but it's very cool to be in the presence of the fella anyway. Common sense is the key when near old dinosaurs like the Cassowary. Keep your distance, especially if there are young around. It's probably best to leave nursing mothers and their young well alone. Don't get close. Don't dare try touching any of them. Just leave them alone. Keep your distance. Stay well away, in order to prevent any chance of disembowlment. Though I'm guessing it's a real many years since anything like that has happened, it's not out of the question when mother is nursing, and cranky. Jeez I sound just like a non local alarmist.
