The counter point of buying an inexpensive sketchbook is if it can't handle a medium you like working with and the only thing left to work and exercise with it is a special paper... The risk is to be more afraid to use that medium and to not use it at the end. I tried an inexpensive sketchbook in where I couldn't do inks, the result is that I almost stop using inks for the entire time I had it and I'm now afraid of using them again. It was only a month. But of course if the inexpensive sketchbook can handle the wanted medium, it's better than an expensive one if there's fear of ruining it.
@JelArts5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's kind of of the trade off! If you get a super cheap sketchbook then it might not really work well with the stuff you're used to using. I find that at least ballpoint pen and pencil work ok on almost every kind of paper I've tried, though! You run into the most trouble with wet media.
@revelhilary5 жыл бұрын
Maybe the option would be to not go SUPER cheap and just get the cheapest of the sketchbooks for the media you want to use, I usually have several sketchbooks at the same time for different things and they’re all pretty cheap (one for water color, one for mix media, one for random pencil/pen sketches and a more expensive one for the GOOD stuff 😅) a couple of them I made myself with things I had already so i feel less bad about ruining them
@amelialovecraft56215 жыл бұрын
A good tip I've come to use is making a small 10 page sketchbook out of Bulk cardstock you can get from most office supplies stores. The paper is a decent weight to support a wetter medium, but it takes some experimenting.

I have four sketchbooks going at the moment, one photo studies/reference sketchbook, two doodle sketchbooks and one "nice" sketchbook. I sometimes cut sketches out of the doodle ones if it looks interesting and I put it in the nice one. It definitely helps with getting a cheap sketchbook or even using a notebook to draw in, though it can't take media like watercolours.

Also, a good thing that helped me is thinking "I can always erase it." It really helps. It helped me stop being so stressed and feeling like I had to get it right first time, because no one does, and that's perfectly fine. Erasing is always an option, and it's really good to keep that in mind.

Sometimes one of the things might look cool. Well when you get a cheap one you have easily tearing weak paper that makes you afraid to try stuff. Then again, stuff out today is really good. Canson XL mixed media for example. I even PAINT in those - watercolor, gouache, acrylic... Also the Hobby Lobby equivalent is cheaper and warps a little more with wet media but works good. Weekly coupon, occasional 1/2 off sale for either store you'll get it for less than you spend on a Latte at Starbucks. Now obviously you can't wet the whole thing for a soaky watercolor. But you can use a watercolor pad and sketch with it having lots of colors and let it dry a few minutes. Or huge ink soaking and again limited diluting ink with water. Personally I keep a seperate "Practice Only" book I try to fill a page or 1/2 a page daily with sketches, like from Pinterest to just practice drawing. Faces, figures, hands, book covers, scenes... Keep it seperate from creative project notes. Really helped.

I’ve been finding myself recently being really weird about sketching now that I’m in art school, and I kinda lose confidence with my sketches when they don’t look clean. Like- I want messy sketchbooks, but I don’t want to use graphite because of all the smearing. I feel like using graphite will help me get looser though. Idk, Ive been having a lot of weird doubts recently
@emmettowl5 жыл бұрын
I can't stand things that smear either. (Or anything that creates dust. Bleh!) For loosening up, I've been using a "Koh-I-Noor Magic Lead" pencil for sketching. It's really huge and the colour changes as you use it, so it basically takes a whole bunch of your control away. And the outcome always looks quite satisfying even if the sketch itself isn't great!

Now my question is thought process, or is it just a pure process of imagination and creation occuring simultaneously, your hands leading your mind through a subconscious flow of art, more like a day dream than thought out art, and upon completion, you awake from the day dream, a daydream of creation, yet of non realization coexisting in one entity, or rather, are you merely practicing what whilst you need ? I wonder... Art, they call it... Quite the strange entity of indefinable , well everything, medium, radius, ability, thought process, methods, means, and so on and so forth, into infinity, and beyond...

My two ways of coping with this: 1) I use 4-5 sketchbooks at the same time, plus I paint on single sheets too. 4 of my sketchbooks are for doodling, experimenting and having fun, and only one of them is reserved for nice drawings and paintings. Everything I draw in that book is carefully planned. I do experiments in my other 4 sketchbooks and once I feel I can do this the way I want to, then I do it in the nice sketchbook. 2) I overpaint the parts I don't like with black paint and put a golden 💛 on top of it. 😂

I am terrified of my sketchbook! I struggle just to start. I’ve always drawn other cartoons and feel very uncomfortable drawing “off the cuff.” Those cathartic words being said, I’ve been thinking about how much I consume compared to how much I produce. I don’t want to be a person that ONLY consumes KZbin videos of art and not actually drawing. Fortunately every time I’ve mustered up the courage to sketch I’ve really enjoyed the process though and can be proud of what I’ve made. Yet, whenever I see a sketchbook tour I mostly see "polished" and finished illustrations, basically everything looking perfectly set, which kinda builds up my sketchbook fear. But I am trying to accept the fact that sketchbook book has no rules and just playing around is acceptable ^^

For me it is buy many sketch books so pages seem less precious. I don't fill out pages like you do most of the time. What I like about pages being worth less is that if I've been struggling with something and don't like the look of it I can just turn the page. I can redraw it on my new page, but I won't dwell on it. It isn't bad to have bad art in there, to see your failures. You can look at it an analyze it and see where you might have gone wrong. It is a great motivation when it is something you don't like looking at so you're hellbent in not seeing it continue.

My problem is that most of my sketches I give up on after a few minutes. I have a few that are drawings I’ve been working on for a while, but most of them end up never getting past sketchy/ joke doodle art.

I have no fears of sketching... i CAN’T not draw, without feeling really frustrated.
