I think you missed an important aspect of this story. At the time (2014) one could not only access the app's immediate consumer data via facebook APIs, but also that consumer's friends. That's how although there were only 270k users of that app Kogan could harvest 50 million users' data indirectly and probably illegally. Facebook has obviously fixed this hole after they became aware of it.

I am pretty sure facebook teams will resolve the privacy issues and data security in a complete fair way. Another issue you addressed here is fake profiles. I really want some steps to be taken on social platforms to solve this fake users issue. It can be facebook, Instagram, youtube, Twitter.. etc. This changes are really necessary to access internet for everyone. Also everyone needs to understand term “profile picture “. As a data engineer I dont see why the hell it is a big problem. I use facebook SDK for our android app to capture event data . On top of that I also build serverless API to capture granular event data. Users has already agreed to the term and conditon when using the service. Why it is a big deal ???

I think the fake news is followed because of the humor it has. If you heard of Stephen colbert, Jon stewart for example, their news are hilarious. Now these people have a set of "rules and regulations" that specifies what is wrong and what is right. Now why it is needed there? Just because you are in a physical world and you "are aware of consequences". Unfortunately in IT everything is virtual and that is both an opportunity and an issue. You can "understand machine" and develop an algorithm to manipulate it according to your wants. Moreover "one life is not enough to understand a machine fully. We understand it in parts". So the fake profile stuff that you were discussing- I have some different opinion. So I don't think fake profiles are the problem. It's more of people just putting more and more of their personal stuff online to a point that their personal life gets affected. There is reddit where everyone has a fake name, even on the some forms on deep web where everyone are encouraged to use a fake name. For example if I post a picture on FB, every single comment matters. And a bad comment will do spoil my reputation. But on reddit, no one cares. And yes I am aware of the fact that there are pretty bad stuff posted on reddit. But the same is happening in real world

We are thinking that our data got leaked through facebook only but there are N numbers ways our data got leaked already. Ex: let's say about google products, even though we are deleting some data in mail or drive any where , but always there is a master copy available and these guys tracking each and everything of your info . Now everything is potentially risk and we are in hopeless situation , either we have to detached from internet or some thing which we can't avoid . recently i came across one of the google products which has all backups from starting day onward creation of account. Link : takeout.google.com/settings/takeout ... from this you can download all your past data which has got deleted from google products and still they are saving everything. @Hitesh, tell me on thing this kind of data won't going to be miss-utilized? some day some one will hack and steal entire data and they will make business out of that.
