Based on Swedish law's and i'm guessing the states corporate laws doesn't differ to much i would say that because its a project purposely intended to develop new products the company don't need to compensate the developers in other ways then they're usual salary and in this case its mostly interns working on the products... in other cases where If an employee from a company develops a product by themselves that's linked to they're work and isn't something they have been told to research/work on it gives them the rights to the product and has to be compensated by the company for them to use it. generally this applies to patentable inventions and i'm not sure about all the rules regarding electronic apps but i would guess that something like this is highly likely to be patented. AND of course all of this can be regulated in the contract the intern and/or employee has to sign before they start working for the company. In pure profit thinking this is really genius.

Hackathons is a way to disrupt yourself and play defensive moves to protect Facebook from encroaching competition.
