FACEBOOK SYSTEM DESIGN | WHY FACEBOOK's TAO CAME INTO THE PICTURE ? | GRAPH DATABASE

Facebook initially used to use MySQL database and Memcache over the top of it to serve the social graphs. But, there were some huge bottlenecks, therefore they came up with the graph database Facebook's TAO. How did it solve the problems for them? Also, if they still use the MySQL database underneath, then how does it work in unison with TAO ??
