A core memory I have is a picture of my Grandpa while he lived in the UK, leaning on the corner of the hood of a Facel Vega HK500. The smug look on his face. I had to ask Final Gear forums almost two decades ago to identify it. Thanks for making this video.

If Facel Vega was a brand today, I know in my heart they’d make an Audi Q8 based SUV after being acquired by VAG because they seem to love changing brands into SUV shills.

They do what sells. And what because of the Urus and the Bentayga VAG „loves to change brands into SUV shills“? VAG made those brands profitable and that’s part of it I guess.

Porsche made the decision to sell SUVs because it was the only way to financially prop up the company while still selling 911s and doing other fun things like going racing and building fun projects like the 918.

1. Talking about Ferrari or Aston Martin among the great European GTs is easy and commonplace, but when someone includes Iso, Gordon Keeble, Bristol, Monteverdi, he deserves respect! 2. When this is done to talk about the Facel, it is a high-level articulation! 3. One of the best videos of this rare French brand on KZbin up to this point. Congratulations and thanks for that. Awww yiis. I finally caught you this early. And with a great subject to match! Shame that the Facelia caused its F-V's downfall ultimately. My dad once told me stories about how these Parisian sculptures used to dot the area around his parent's house in Palm Beach when he was a child and I was captivated more effectively than one of Anouk Aimee's performances. However, with this one, it would be best to leave more alone than three-day old escargot. Facel-Vega was originally formed in 1939 to make components for the equally Gallic aircraft manufacturer Bronzavia. After the war, the firm broke away from Bronzavia like a rebellious child and diversified into automobiles. No voiture du genes, these. They were automobiles that were built beyond the highest standard with no regard given whatsoever to cost. It soon became a well-regarded enterprise and sold fairly well for what it was with a couple thousand cars per year on average. Icarus was flying high. It was time for the wings to melt. In order to gain more market share in an increasingly volume-driven world, management decided to create a marginally more affordable Facel-Vega with the Facellia (little Facel) in the 1960 model year. It was to have an inline four-cylinder engine that was to be sourced from Volvo. However, the French government obliged themselves to step in wearing the jackboots of over-regulation. They declared that no large-scale French carmaker (which the Facel group apparently qualified as) was to use a foreign engine. The available domestic units were not powerful enough, so Facel-Vega resorted to making their own in desperation. It did not work out. The resulting 1.6 liter DOHC unit was built by renowned Facel supplier Pont-à-Mousson. As it was only held together with only two main bearings versus the usual four or five; excessive flex, timing problems, and frequent failures happened en beaucoup. Facel-Vega was too weak to rebound from the inevitable bad press and liquidated in 1964. Like the Bourbon monarchy of old, however, they have crept up into the limelight of the modern world and we are all the more thankful for it. The good news is that I owned a '62 Studebaker GT Hawk IN 2017 as my first car. That was evidently referred to back then as the Midwestern Facel-Vega. I'm still not sure whether that's a compliment on the GT Hawk or an insult to Facel-Vega!

What a great account About 1963, when in Southend-On-Sea, England, I met Franky, a charming Swiss au-pair, who was studying part-time at South Essex College. On weekends, I'd regularly be invited to a party. And she would have her employer get us there - by picking me up from my parents house. He'd arrive with her on the back seat, in a gleaming black FaçelVega. And our workingclass neighbours, some in curlers, would step out to gaze at us. Then, we'd turn onto the newly-laid A127, which was nearly empty and, speed toward Leigh-On-Sea &c, in the course of which I could hear little more than a swooshing as we passed each lamp-post. On one Saturday, she held a party at her employer's house. And I invited some friends to attend - through which, Gary Brooker of The Paramounts got to join us. He and Franky fell for either-other right away - for which I wished them well. But I never saw her after that - when he was forming Procol Harum. But, in 1964 I found an advertisement, in Exchange & Mart, in which her employer was offering that wonderful car for sale

I can't believe I've only just found this video. One anecdote that I vaguely remember concerns (I think) Sterling Moss, or maybe Rob Walker. Upon taking delivery of a new Facel II he placed a St Christopher charm that he'd been given, and which was magnetic, on the dashboard and was shocked to find that it stuck to the "wood". Slightly appalled at the apparent cheapening he complained to the dealer, who took the medallion to his old HK and showed that the magnetic medallion stuck to the "wood" in that car too.

@jakekaywell5972 Жыл бұрын
@@BRAINFxck10 I'll def disagree there. The GT Hawk rightly wowed the public when it was new and sold three times more in 1962 than the prior winged '61 Hawk. The only reason why its comparitively forgotten today is because it was around this time that the board of directors decided that Studebaker should get out of cars entirely, regardless of how good the GT was. It was considered a clean, restrained American lux design at a time when pretty much the only other two options were the Ford Thunderbird and the Continental.
