THIS STORY:
Thomas A. Dowdy wanted a better life for his wife Susan and their eight children when he decided to move from Goliad to a small town that was then named Eura in Kerr County,
On October 5, 1878, still in the midst of unpacking their belongings, the Dowdy family was going about their normal day. Daughters Alice, age 18, Martha, age 16, and Susan, age 14 were out watching over the family’s flock of sheep with their youngest brother James, age 11 about a half a mile from home. The oldest brother, Richard, was at home with a friend, who was engaged to one of the girls, to eat an early lunch. They finished their lunch around 11 a.m. and headed to the spot where the Dowdy girls and their brother were tending the sheep.
They were nowhere to be found.
A horrific scene would soon be discovered.
THIS CHANNEL:
_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

Shot with a gun and arrows and tomahawks left, looks like a tactic used often too point ppl in the direction of ppl who did not do it, they never leave a tomahawk behind after battle and certainly not after this, very sad those kids were a victim of this.

I agree @white people did this! A native where the captured the children and the women took them back to the tribe and made slaves of the women and adopted to children out into the families. The war weapons wouldn't have been left behind, I believe that the only thing you would have seen that was of native would have been an arrow and that would have been it

My grandfather came with his family from Salamanca Spain landed in San Francisco and walked with their children to Hayward to carve out a better life after he was told that the streets of California were paved with gold. Grandma asked why he didn't pick up some of that gold so they didn't have to walk so far. My Aunt never camped after that said it reminded her of walking so far eating squirrels. ❤

Infant mortality rates then were truly horrific If you got to five your odds increased dramatically and again at twenty But it cannot be stressed enough: pre antibiotics and vaccination: you were in a very different world. I was listening to a Native American man give a presentation about the wars for the Old Northwest and he said he believes the pioneers are just as heroic the warriors defending their land since they did not know what they would face yet went into the unknown anyway. The white vs red of the Old Westerns, which I love, is a false dichotomy. Many times the the parties raiding the settlers had members of European ancestry And many times there were Native Americans helping the settlers fight off the Indians.

Hello and welcome to my part of Texas. My husband and I live in Boerne, Kendall County and have visited Kerrville, which is in Kerr County. I love the hills covered in their scrub oak and cedar. I have never heard this account, and am a bit ashamed as I taught Texas History for 18 of my 29 years as a public school teacher (I substituted for the last 7). We moved to this part of Texas from Katy (west of Houston) a year after Hurricane Harvey and have never regretted it. We love the scenery and the history of our German town, which is the county seat. I hope you liked the Texas Hill Country and will come back often.

The most coveted prizes that a Comanche raiding party could bring back to the tribe were captives, ,mainly older children and teenagers, especially female. The Comanches were at war with everybody that they came into contact with and could not keep their numbers up without outside "help". I believe that the left behind tomahawks and the killing and not capturing of these kids make me believe that they were murders committed to make the Comanche the fall guys...not that the Comanche needed help in garnering a worse reputation than they made for themselves.

In reading a diary written by one of my ancestors, I learned how cruel the native tribes could be. One of the families was kidnapped by Iroquois and taken hundreds of miles through the forests. The father was firced to carry an immensely heavy copper kettle full of goods strapped to his back. He carried the scars for life. Each time he fell he was beaten until he stood up. The wife gave birth on the trail to a baby who lived just a few minutes, and had to bury him under a tree. The family were in servitude to the tribe for several years.

While I agree that this is a sad and horrific story, the fact that weapons were left behind does seem odd. They were neither easy to make and it was never "woman's work" as the Gods would cause any weapon made by a woman to break. We also need to remember that that Native Americans were defending their country. The members of the LDS Church are just as guilty for dressing up as Indians and destroying people and possessions of wagon trains. I love the history you bring us!

Thank you so much for this video and your hard work to bring it to us. I very much appreciate your humbleness and the care you take when telling the stories/historical event. Dowdy is a family name, so when I heard the name, my ears really perked up. I'm going to have to do a little searching in my tree. There are quite a few people in the comments who are Dowdys or kin to Dowdys, I think that's very interesting. We just might all be related. Thanks again, Ron. Have a blessed day. From Melissa in the mountains of Virginia. Btw, I was so curious when I came upon the first commenter who shares the name Dowdy that I read ALL of the comments. Lol! :) Edited to add: There are currently 482 comments at this time. March 3, 2023. Yes, I really did read ALL of the comments. Ikr, probably thinking... crazy lady. Lol! :)

That type of killing is very unlike anything I have heard about the Comanche especially concerning children. Why anyone would do such a terrible thing is beyond me. I can't imagine the grief of the parents. Thank you for telling us about them. The graves are really outstanding for the time period. Keep Safe ❤Keep Well❤

What a terrible thing! When you said the Tomahawks were left behind and they were shot? I was like White people trying to blame the American Indians! Either way! Terrible! Done for nothing! Thanks for sharing this story Ron! And tell Nathan, I'm sorry I was thinking he was Danny! I'm sure he cares! 😆 As always, safe travels! 🙏 💕

After the way the native Indians were treated after helping the pioneers to settle, not to mention that scalping was introduced to the Indians by the white man. They were peaceful mostly, history has told us this.

I don’t know if anyone else noticed this but Sallie Smith was born in 1882 and has no death date so she is still alive at 141. Way to go Sallie.

How does anyone have the heart to do something like this to children. This is so sad and those poor parents. I'm sure it traumatized the surviving kids too. I love this little cemetery though.
