AH, THIS SAVED ME. Thank you so much!! I was trying to draw this digitally for embroidery, but I have no idea how the lighting and shading works, so this was super useful!

I watched intently as you did these little gems -- you are so right, it seems so backwards to do the light on the bottom. OK I'll try this. Just finished two pages in the Swedish book with lots of gems and I now see what I could've done better. Thank you so much for your very sweet and friendly manner and encouragement.

Nonfaceted gemstones are called cabochons (cabs for short). Faceted gemstones that you are calling "buttons" are further described by their shape and cut. So a brilliant round is a faceted round gemstone with close to 100 different cuts although you can't see with naked eye. An emerald cut is a long rectangular shape with few facet lines. Check with Wikipedia if you want to get the shape/facet pattern accurate.

Lol i call the buttons because they dont have enough facets to be a rosecut which would be flat on the bottom but completely faceted on top. Nor do the show pavillion facets on the bottom. Most of my followers are lovely older women who like to color in coloring books and wouldnt understand proper terminology anyway so I make things easy to remember for them.

We need to learn how to draw the lights from the shadow because the secret of 3d beauty stands behind this.

Hi!! I Just today found your channel and am thriiled with learning how to *correctly* do these gems!! I have one question...what did you use to make the sparkling highlights towards the end? It sounded like you said a sparkling white pen??? I've not seen one, I've onle seen people use regular white pens, but I LOVED yours!!! Thanks!!! Also I'd love to know where you bought it and also, I just ordered one of your books too!!!!
