While not my family personally, the United States of America as a nation has almost completely turned its back on God. Yet, we still aspire to be ‘one nation under God.’ The phrase ‘God bless America’ carries a weight- God calls us into a relationship with Him. We cannot live godless lives and expect His blessings upon us.

Honestly, we're a nation in relatively constant turmoil. It is well worth remembering Watergate, the chaos of 1968 (race riots, the DNC riots, MLK and RFK being killed), the unrest of the Civil Rights era, the Gilded Age & many labor uprisings, Reconstruction (events like the Colfax Massacre, the election of 1876), the 1860s (Civil War), the 1850s (caning of Sumner, Bleeding Kansas), Nat Turner, the Whiskey Rebellion, the chaos of the years under the Articles of Confederation. I didn't even get into any of the economic panics, barely discussed our wars, or (either attempted or successful) presidential assassinations. We're a nation born of conflict, marked by constant change. Peacetime, frankly, is the anomaly in some respects. It doesn't make chaotic times easier to live through, but it some ways living in a chaotic time is the reversion to the mean. Peace is rare and we should cherish it when it comes, and do what we can to make it last. In many ways, those with power could do more to foster a more prosperous and peaceful world, but that would likely entail sacrifices to their comfort that they aren't interested in making.

The object of leadership is to chart a direction that we should all follow. Today there has been an indulgence of pro Palestinian demonstrators, who voiced support for a ceasefire and humanitarian relief in Gaza, which has been coupled with some antisemitic rhetoric. What I'm not hearing is how the current situation is any different from the last horrific war in Gaza (2003-2004), where tens of billions in humanitarian aid was sent to the poor, starving citizens of Gaza. What did Hamas, the PLA, and the Islamic world do with the outpouring of relief to the Palestinian people???
