What they give you should not be noodles. I have never seen that kind of noodles in my life. There must be a big misunderstanding! The word you asked is 「豪仕坊/ Hao Shi Fang」, 「豪仕/Hao Shi」 is the name of the street, and 「坊/Fang」is an ancient alley! (In fact these two words can be interpreted separately: "豪/Hao" is a hero, "仕/Shi" is a litterateur.) Inside that alley is a community, and and it is also the best-preserved century-old building. Great job, thanks a lot for sharing！👍😄👏

Yeah, Chinese herbal tea helps to reduce "heatiness" from the body. One can easily find this type of tea in a Chinatown. Aah, those "noodles" look more like cripsy pancakes. l could hear the crunchy sound when you bite it 😂 Wow, that's a lovely alleyway and the buildings upstair are well -preserved... picturesque indeed. Love that pinkish purplish sky. Very kind of that young man to offer his helping hand and he speaks good English. Yeah, internet plays a very important part in this modern era. For most Chinatowns around the world, "Chinatown" is a kinder designation for what actually is a (Chinese) ghetto. As been mentioned elsewhere, Cho Lon never was/is a Chinese ghetto, it was practically one half of former Saigon, the other half contained the French quarter, the civic quarter and so on. The Chinese were a major part of the city economic life pre 1975. Most of the land in Saigon (and Cho Lon) then belonged to a Chinese tycoon who started his business career as a junk collector, Uncle (Chu) Hoa. The deed of my parents house in Cho Lon had his signature/stamp as the seller. At the end of the war his family migrated to France, leaving behind their private villa which now houses Saigon's Fine Arts Museum, a few steps from Ben Thanh Market. An architectural gem, French-designed and built no less. If you want to see "fusion," East meets West, etc. look no further. FYI, "Cho Lon" literally means the big market, in comparison to the still existing Ben Thanh. Soon after the Binh Tay Market, still standing, superceded Cho Lon as the New Big Market aka "Cho Lon Moi." The original Cho Lon had ceased to exist even in my (growing up) era. Last but not least, So Vietnam had it all: corruption, repression, etc. but it also had class, style and most of all a soul. All that was wiped out when the Vietcongs came to town in 1975, these guys were hell bent to annihilate life as the So Vietnamese had known until then, to the point of having to chose whether death at the bottom of the ocean (re boat people,) or life (for the vanquished) under communism. The Vietcongs called this plan "re-unification," and most of the free world fell for this false notion. Uncle Ho was applauded for what he really was, a mini-Mao.

The lane is called Hao Shi Fang in mandarin. Apparently it was built in 1909. You have inadvertently discovered a gem in Chinatown. I found it such interesting architectural design for community living, similar concept to long houses in Sarawak.

Chinatown in Vietnam is different than other countries because it is the largest Chinatown in the world, it has a long history and it's very wide, spanning many districts, in the past it was a city of its own, not just a small area, from time to time people just keep it as it is. Meanwhile other countries, Chinatown is more stereotype since they make it more commercial, compacted and over-decorate it with Chinese things. That makes Chinatown in Saigon looking not as cool and appealing but it's definitely more real and authentic. Nice video as always 🥰

I think it is not the oldest Chinatown in the world. I googled the oldest chinatown and the oldest Chinatown is in Binondo, Manila Philippines.

As I say it is very large and in the past it was a city of Cho Lon, so it's technically something bigger than a town. No Vietnamese consider this place a Chinatown, they just call it Cho Lon as a region.

The ducks and chickens in VN don't need to be drugged to get quiet . They are so used to the noise and chaotic traffic here . Only Western newcomers get nervous when they walk in Vietnam's streets Ha Ha ... FYI the Saigon's Chinatown (Cho Lon = Big Market in Vietnamese ) is much bigger than the one in Bangkok and KL . It is formed by 5 districts ( D5 , D6, D8 , D10 and D11) . You were just in one district so why you didn't see any Chinese temples , assembly halls , big restaurants and shopping centers . The restaurant you went to is actually a vegan one . By its name An Duyen ( a Buddhist word which means Good Karma or Good Predestiny) I can already guess that is a Buddhist Vegan restaurant . Glad to know that you are still in VN . So your visa issue is currently solved right ?

@@AuntyJack123 For visa renewal , just take the bus from HCMC to the Cambodian border , enter to this country's territory then come back to VN to get a visa extension . The whole procedure takes about half a day and costs less than 100 USD ( round trip by bus and visa fees for both countries )

It's good you lost your inter-net for a while it will heighten your awareness. When I first went to Asia there were no smart phones so you had to improvise and read paper maps.
