I was thinking this to myself today before seeing this woman too. They have such a huge range of tenacious women working for them I love opening any video or podcast because they almost always include or refer to the work of the wonderful women at 2nd Try. I grew up (as a woman) thinking there was like 3 or 4 formulas for successful personalities and idk I’ve loved seeing how different they are from each other but all individually so cool.

@@Mandyxthexevil it really depends on the type of research you go into. :) Often, it springboards from a particular background. Medical researchers, historians, etc. Personally, I do a wide variety of research but I started as an education researcher and my background is in education. I published research, and then that qualified me to write/produce more, and then branch out into other fields. I also do historical research, and I have some niche areas of expertise that I consult on. (Harems through the ages! The Ottoman Empire! The last Dowager Empress of China! XD) Though my general skill set means I can do the sort of fact checking they are discussing in this podcast- and I have on rare occasion- it’s not my specialty so I don’t get hired for it often.

Would you guys ever consider doing a video showcasing any of the Indigenous artists, culture, cooking or maybe inviting Indigenous KZbinrs or TikTokrs? Maybe a collab? I love how respectful all of you are to others, their culture, and things like that, and the Indigenous community is struggling right now to be taken seriously and be respected. There are many cultural projects they are doing to raise awareness to certain things such as the MMIW+ (Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women (Children, LGBTQ+, & 2Spirit) The thing is, they get zero air time on national networks and are treated almost as if they don't exist anymore. Just thought I'd ask.

Especially after the case where Gabby Petito's family received some form of closure while there are hundreds of missing Indigenous women with families who would love to know where their loved ones are. That case was infuriating to watch play out. We just suddenly forgot that people go missing every day or something. Anywho, I know I would love to learn more about the culture. Can you give me a couple of your favorite KZbinrs? I would love to look up their channels (I don't have Tik Tok). Thanks! (Yes. I know I can also look this up, and I will as well. My two cents about vaccine passports: we have to show our ID and some personal info to do SO MANY things - drive a car, buy alcohol, vote, etc. To buy a beer I have to show the seller my picture id with Bday, address and physical description. Having to show a data card to get into certain places is no different than requiring children to be vaccinated before school and at this point is obvious that we need some compulsory rules for public spaces. Most laws are made for the most reckless of us - this would be no different.

The difference I guess, take in mind I am vaccinated just playing devil's advocate for proxy, is that licenses are for privileges, ability to drive a car legally required money given to the gummament, and already being in a lookup system. A vaccine passport insinuates the Holocaust show your number vibe
@janewiseman
@janewiseman 3 жыл бұрын
@@geraldineyorarou2221 No it absolutely does not. Do you have a social security number? Do you think requiring specific degrees for technical jobs is like the Third Reich? Not everyone can do EVERYTHING and some actions require specific pre-requisites. Having access to private businesses IS a privilege. Kids have to show proof of vaccination to attend school and that even involves entities that get state funding. People can choose to not get vaccinated but there are consequences -like not being allowed into certain venues. Nothing about this is similar to the Holocaust and it's not a 'devils advocate' argument. Anyone actually using this argument is being extremely selfish and is displaying an inability to think critically about modern day society as well as our history.

Really enjoyed this one. In the 80s as an intern at a pretty big newspaper I spent quite a bit of time doing fact checking. With no Internet. Print journalism was in a really good place then. The facts were checked, rechecked. The wording: few, many, most. Know all about it. The reporters and editors were amazing. Now major network news articles are grammar trash. It’s painful. Then in the 90s I was a librarian. Talk about research heaven. I got paid to “look stuff up” for people before everyone had the Internet literally in their pocket. ❤️
@TheShauNanigans
@TheShauNanigans 3 жыл бұрын
Sadly, we can thank Reagan for the lack of fact checking in a lot of today's media. News outlets don't need to ask an opposing viewpoint onto their news outlets, so why bother fact checking when the echo chamber will just believe whatever the "expert" says with no push back. Then we continue to defund education without putting that money in meaningful programs, which produces the bad grammar. It's irritating for me because I was an English major in college, and I intentionally type out everything because I don't want to accidentally start writing incorrectly just because I'm not graded on it. Sometimes even at major newspapers I have to wonder whether material received even one set of second eyes. Then I realize we live in a world where news is constant, 24/7, and it is all about ratings and ad revenue, not about whether the article is interesting or useful. So they are probably forced to churn out material, which is sadly another fault with media in America. It's really depressing to think about how much things have deteriorated in the last 50-70 years. Even more depressing that it shows no sign of stopping.

Have Zoe on the Guilty Pleasures podcast and watch the Men in Black trilogy! Zoe bringing up the point about the vaccine situation in developing countries, and Ned summing it up with "The disrespect" is EXACTLY what I've been bringing up in discussions with friends. Not only "The disrespect" but also "The privilege"! Vaccine passports? I personally have no issue with it, because I've travelled to countries where the Canadian government already asks travellers to get certain vaccines before going to said countries. And submitting proof of getting said vaccines to the government before travelling. I'm used to it, so for me it's not a problem.

I’m with you Zach on the lack of empathy. I’ve worked as an “essential” worker the whole pandemic and I’ve seen the worst in people during this whole thing. The fact that I’m in state with an extremely high vaccination rate but I still have to go back to wearing a mask because of people who refuse to get vaccinated is infuriating. Also if MCR reunion gets postponed AGAIN I’m suing antivaxxers
@silverink1824

I agree and I'm going to go a step further with this because as a customer service worker and as a fast food worker they had to remind people to wear their masks while they're waiting online or while they're in the store I get that rare few that would tell us that we're heroes but still also be the same ones that are fighting us somewhere in the masks so at this point I just find anyone acknowledging the essential workers is Heroes really more of a condescendence than actually acknowledging what we've been doing the whole time we've been carrying the economy on our shoulders we've been overworked burnt out underappreciated and when they finally do show us the minimal appreciation it comes off really condescending and I don't know if you feel it that way but this is what I feel after all of this throughout this entire pandemic I'm burnt out underappreciated and I can just see when this thing gets worse again they're going to have the same time for tantrums they're not going to learn anything they're not going to appreciate us any better than they already do and we're going to still be carrying the economy on our shoulders yet again

We have so many signs on our doors and we tell people on the phone that a mask is required (state requirement as we are a healthcare facility) and we get so many people in that don't wear one or refuse outright to put one on. We have a box of disposable ones at the front desk for people to take so there is literally no excuse. If I'm in the back I don't have to wear mine because I'm vaccinated but they still suggest we start again with the delta variant. I'm actually switching jobs partially because we have been so beyond busy it is draining me and partially bc people have become more rude and noncompliant since the pandemic started. It's awful

@@brynna8619 honestly I agree with Zak whatever he says it denotes a lack of empathy and it does and I can understand why there are apprehensive but I can understand why it's so much more important to do so and I never stopped wearing my mask after I got fully vaccinated I kept wearing mine on the principle that the customer service people are not free from wearing the mask and as soon as I know that they are able to not wear masks that's when I know where more safe than we are now

@@alli1878 Hi, tbh I don't even know how I land at my current job. It takes a lot of chances to take me here. But I'd say you already have the necessary skills for it. I actually started off as a researcher and analyst, then moved on to become a journalist. I still consider myself a journalist because my job involves with a lot of researching, investigating, analyzing, fact-checking, and writing. It's just that my works are not "published" they are handed to others to work on however they need. If you're really good at your job, people will start to recognize you even if you're only on the back stage and never "on the stage." Then, you just have to be aware of opportunities that come knocking your door. I hope this helps!

II'd also like to add that this line of job can be disheartening at times. I have had parts of my written research reports stolen and published under other people's names and I can't do anything about it. I have worked for million-dollor projects but my name was not credited. My ideas have also been taken without my consent. These kinds of things just come with the jobs and just like Zoe, I don't maintain a social media presence, so it's kinda my mistakes in a way hahaha. But as I mentioned, it's the best job I can find that utilizes all my skills and make me feel worthwhile. It's just like any other jobs in the worlds, there are perks and disadvantages.

vaccine passports are a no for all the reasons she said. its a slippery slope from that to marginalized groups being targeted. but definitely I think that people would have to show their COVID vaccine cards to go anywhere fun. You have the right to not get it but not the right to continue operating in society and putting everyone around you in danger.

Wow I am *that* friend that tends to fact-check our conversations and read articles about the most banal things and I didn’t realize that was an actual job! I am a very average graphic designer but also definitely am a person of random interests and one thing that really CONSUMED MY BRAIN was the fact that whenever I wanted to share anything I learned was that when I talked I felt INCREDIBLY INSECURE about the facts I was talking about even if I learned it 5 seconds ago! NOW I understand that, and feel very happy with the fact that my brain is not that broken, it’s just that the more I know the less I feel I know!! 🤯 THANK YOU FOR THIS POADCAST it made me feel less of a weirdo. ❤️

Dear Zach, you should know that Koreaboo is infamous among kpop fandoms for their misleading articles and clickbait tweets, often using provoking titles so fans would engage/react to their tweets. They aint a good kpop media source jsyk haha it’s cool that they made an article about you even tho they took your words out of context (as they wont to do)

Hearing about the Fauci interview was hilarious because to people who do semi-structured interviews as a research tool, we know these things. You rarely get through all the questions quickly, people end up answering future questions in their answers to other questions, etc.

In Denmark we've had to show negative tests or vaccince passes whenever we were going to a bigger outdoor events, and for a lot of inside events. The restriction is being dropped in September 2021, but it's been a thing for a while.

I have several anti-vax family members. We have lost 3 relatives in one month due to COVID and several have been seriously sick from the virus and they STILL won’t get it. I am beyond exhausted trying to sway them. I’m at the point where I’m just depressed about it all and have shut myself away from them. But we’ve lost so many family members that it hurts so much to cut them off. :/

ALSO. The family members we lost are in a third world country, they don’t have access to the vaccine or even good health care and my jackass family members who are refusing it are in American where it’s fucking free and down the goddamn street and they won’t get it.

Please seek therapy if you are not already. I am not saying this in a condescending way at all. My partner was recently told by his doctor that he should go. His immediate family are not vaccinated and will not vaccinate and I can tell it adds to the overall stress of his life. It probably doesn't help that everyone in my family is vaccinated except a couple cousins I never see anyway. My parents are even getting the booster soon. So the contrast is pretty crazy. Hang in there. This entire thing is even more daunting when you see your family members acting so selfish (sorry for the harshness. I say that about my partner's family too.)

The HIPAA/privacy argument doesn't hold up. To enroll your child in public school in the US, you must provide documentation that your child has received all the required vaccines. If you don't, your child is not coming to school.

Even if you're only reaching people in a "liberal" audience, it's still beneficial to educate people and bring focus to certain topics. I am constantly learning and growing and changing my opinions on things. Also, being more educated on a topic that I agree with helps me convince others in my life.
