I enjoyed the first episode very much, as well as your video talking about it! I did notice an inaccuracy in the first episode though: when they are talking about what food maiko can eat they say that it doesn't matter so long as it gives them strength. I have learned from a woman working as chef to maiko that onions and garlic are NOT allowed as they might cause the maiko to have "strong breath", and also that they must be careful not to gain too much weight, especially if they are known to have a sweet tooth because customers will often be overly generous with gifts of a maiko's favorite snacks. Otherwise I found it a very charming show and look forward to seeing more of it! 🌸🌸🌸 Thanks again for this video!

The manga has more information about what food a Maiko can eat. Not eating garlic or smelly foods is actually the norm in Japan if you work in any service industry, not only Maiko. Even salary men and office ladies only eat those type of foods on holiday and weekends when they don't have to work.

You gotta read the manga, dude! It's got almost 200 chapters and goes into more detail than the show! Not to mention the show skipped like the first 8 chapters that explain why Kiyo's there.
@murrr18083 жыл бұрын
Oh that's interesting! One day, maybe I will xD I wonder if the anime will eventually go into why Kiyo wanted to become a maiko and why she stayed after she quit.
@aidanjanemcintosh69193 жыл бұрын
yup, and the anime didn't even cover my favorite character (Tsurukoma aka Megane-san Onee-san) and her comedic routine with her junior that is also her sworn enemy/closest friend (Riko-chan).

Thankyou for the quick info summary! And especially for giving thorough crediting your sources and photographers. Many videos dont give credit when using pictures and photos! Many believe the mangaka is from or connected to the Karyūkai due to the accuracy.
@murrr18083 жыл бұрын
Of course! I try to give credit where I can because I would be annoyed, too, if someone used my stuff without crediting! I'd also love to know how the mangaka knows so much. I just love it when media gets the little details right - I think it shows a true passion for the subject matter!

BAND-MAID has an alter ego called BAND-MAIKO where they dress as maiko. It would be cool if you critiqued their outfits in the music video "Gion-cho" or "secret MAIKO lips". The song "Gion-cho" is like a love letter to Kyoto and maiko. I wish the anime "Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san" came out with new episodes every week instead of every month.
@murrr18083 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the information! I have never heard of them but I certainly will. I took a quick look at their music video from Gion-cho and their outfits aren't authentic, although they likely aren't aiming for that, perhaps out of respect for real maiko. That being said, it would be interesting to do an analysis of one of their videos! Also, I agree - I'm really enjoying Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san so far and wish it was weekly. I thought the first episode was a little boring but the episodes following it have been so relaxing and heartwarming.

@@murrr1808 They did add the piece of jewelry on the front of their obi for "Gion-cho" that was missing in "secret MAIKO lips". In the first video, some had first-year styled hair decorations but didn't have first-year makeup. Of course, without special haircuts, the hair was way off. Considering these two videos were for April fools day, they seem to put a lot of effort into them, especially the lyrics of "Gion-cho". If you watch a regular BAND-MAID video you'll see their normal 'maid cafe' look. Thanks for taking the time to watch.

I'm late but I think there was a panel in the manga where Sumire and Kiyo were standing in front of a kamon with 3 intertwined rings, which is the kamon of miyagawa-cho, if I'm not mistaken

Okini in general refers to alot, something huge, but over time it generally represents "that means a lot (to me)" as a way of appreciation, because to say okini arigato is rather mouthful, and thus it become common to just say okini as a way of showing appreciation/gratitude. Great way to explain the content. Keep it up! If you are fascinated by the world of maiko in Kyoto, you might wanna check out and explore on maiko of Akiba as well.

Once they become junior maiko they're allowed to use the term neechan, but only for their okiya sisters, who they're really close too. This helps distinguish which girls are apart of the same okiya when there is a large gathering of maiko present. Oneesan/Oneehan is only used for their older sister that they have been specifically bonded too. But neesan/neehan is used for older girls in their okiya as well as girls in other okiya as well.
@murrr18083 жыл бұрын
Are you sure? I've watched so many videos of geiko and maiko and I hear "nee-san" a lot, regardless of if they're close, official sisters, okiya sisters, or just other members of the karyukai.

What's funny is I never watch anime but I have been studying about the karyukai for many years. Very well done and awesome video!! It's nice for you to share this information. I do want to point out that "geiko" in kanji is not actually 芸子, it's 芸妓. It's the same second kanji as in maiko 舞妓. The problem with this reading and spelling is you have to type "geigi" to get it, but in Kyoto it is read as geiko.
@murrr18083 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the correction! I thought the use of 子 was certainly strange when referring to a full-grown woman, but it was the kanji I found when looking up "geiko" so I went with it, even if I was suspecting it was wrong. This clears it up a lot!
