My favorite fact from the boys is how that scene where Homelander imagines mowing down the crowd was actually shot in Canada. In the middle of January. I read the scene where he lets the plane crash as he’s strong enough to carry a plane but physics dont work that way, the plane is not strong enough that a single point can hold its entire weight so you try to lift the plane and punch a hole through it. You’d need like a big net to distribute the weight and the net would have to be strong enough to lift a plane.
@Valiguss2 жыл бұрын
I read it similarly but as like an unwieldy thing, like I could deadlift most people, but the weight distribution and relative size compared to that weight would make it practically difficult to impossible, or like if you’ve ever carried a mistress, it’s not heavy it’s just so big it’s difficult to carry

I believe in the airplane scene he stated that even if he was strong enough to move the plane at that speed he would end up just going straight through it which is how that would actually happen with real world physics because the amount of force needed to counteract the speed of a falling plane concentrated on a spot the size of a person would just punch straight through the plane

And also remember that the walls of planes are less than millimeter thick aluminium (two sheets though iirc)

Being too incompetent to decelerate the plane gradually after matching it's initial velocity. You'd only have to counter the acceleration due to gravity which you can do from the landing gear segment without overstressing the materials. Dude using a casual excuse as if he's contractually obligated to catch it to a standstill instantly
@SuperFizzah2 жыл бұрын
Just like when you were a kid and threw an egg back and forth. You have to dissipate the energy and can't just stick your hand out to catch it, you keep it moving after it hits your hand and slow it down gradually. Otherwise, yes the force of your hand just stopping the egg breaks it open all over you.
@Cwronaga2162 жыл бұрын
@@SuperFizzah even though I'm pretty sure it was an excuse on his end as well but in the case of the catching the egg thing your hand is much larger than the egg therefore the pressure your hand is imparting on a single point on the egg is considerably less than it would be for a plane versus a tiny person. So for example if you tried to catch that same egg with the tip of a ballpoint pen or even the flat side of a pen the amount of precision it would take to keep the pin from going straight through the egg would be ludicrous simply due to pressure or PSI.
@Cwronaga2162 жыл бұрын
@@IndigoWhiskey no I don't know too much about the structural Integrity of the landing gear component of a plane but in this case I believe the plane was still under thrust so unless he deactivated the engines before trying to catch the plane any amount of force needed to counteract the thrust of the plane's engine combined with the surface area of the force he was imparting would result in enough pressure to break whatever part of the plane he was trying to catch. Also even if he brought the plane to a complete stop prior to hitting the ground just the force of the plane pressing down on his small service area would cause the plane to break into pieces. So in order to properly stop the plane he would need to deactivate the thrust then find the planes strongest structural portion and increase his surface area as much as possible by lying flat under the plane and gradually applying Force until he reaches all the way to the ground if the structural Integrity of the plane can even handle that. So he probably could have land the plane safely but I don't think based on what was shown in the episode he had enough time to do so without critical failure of the plane structure. Also he's just an evil dick so

One of the the big reasons the Speed Force was created was to solve the Flash/Superman question. Superman is faster than The Flash. In terms of just raw physical ability, Superman is faster. But the Speed Force is giving The Flash access to a Warp drive. He just breaks the rules that Superman has to adhere to. Regardless of personal opinion on the Snyder Cut, this difference is one thing it showcased incredibly well. The scene where they just ressurected Superman and are stuck having to fight him; The Flash is running under the power of the Speed Force and it is faster than Superman could possibly run or fly...but Superman can see him and just casually turns his head following him as if it is nothing. While breaking reality, there is a point where The Flash is still interacting with it (unless he completely enters the Speed Force). At that level, Superman is faster. It is a difference that is hard to get across; but that scene did it perfectly.

The question shouldn't be whether Homelander can be killed, but rather can he be removed as a threat? Hughie, when taking the V that gives him temporary powers, could just grab Homelander and teleport them both into deep space (hopefully instantly teleporting back to save himself). Without a point of reference to return, Homelander would probably be lost in space forever (I say "probably", because they could always write in some excuse for how he could get back, like an alien race finds him or something).
@ahdvd2 жыл бұрын
He is based off of the idea of Superman, and fairly closely regarding abilities, as when they finally found the chest containing Transluscent’s remains at the bottom of the ocean, he said he couldn’t see through the chest because it was made of a metal ( I can’t remember which one). Superman can’t see through lead, and it wasn’t lead but they still picked one type of metal he can’t see through. So by the same rationale, there must be some element out there or something that is his kryptonite, obviously not radioactive remains of his home planet, but possibly something very rare or something that was around him as a child that he grew up and was exposed to that he maybe would have an allergy to? I haven’t read the comics, but can imagine that would be an interesting storyline

I think a cool riff on the idea of super speed would be they're capable of traveling at an almost limitless speed, but they have normal human acceleration, so it takes a while for them to get really moving. Everyone who has super speed can just fucking go, it'd be an interesting mix up

Just throwing it out there. In DnD Intimidation is a skill proficiency based on charisma. Basically he's got a charisma build that specializes in Intimidation (kinda)

If there's anyone else still craving more superhero stuff, you should read the Webserial Worm. I fucking love it and it's my current obsession. Some of the powers have horrific implications. Honestly I cannot recommend it enough I have an issue

Unless Homelander has some kind of ability that lets him hold the plane together or the world runs on comic book physics, he wouldnt have been able to catch the plane. Not because he lacks the strength, but because he'd simply rip it apart. PHYSICS BABY!

There needs to be something called The Homelander Test that, if someone unironically loves Homelander's character for what he does, stand for, etc., that person is IMMEDIATELY considered dangerous and is immediately banned from all of social media, shunned from society, and/or arrested.

Heads up I wouldn’t consider the comics as hints for what will happen as elements have already been changed. And characters are completely different too

I object... Homelander gave a pretty good excuse not to save the plane. "If I attempts to lift the plane it will snap in half..." - paraphrasing You are correct he does not want to look bad, and in his eyes if he attempts to try and stop the plane from falling more than likely the amount of weight and velocity between the plane on that single pivot point, ie his hands, would quite literally snap in half leading to horrific deaths for the passengers... This fact has nothing to do with morality but physics... We know this to be true because he only cares about his image, and if he truly thought he could catch the plane and land it safely without losing a single person he would have because then he would look like that much of a badass to the public... And his appearance is everything to him... But in the end again you are right, let's just say even if he was potentially right, one would say it is worth the try... But if you tries and fails, but more importantly looks like he made the situation worse, he would look bad... No different than the crowd yelling at him and talking trash when he imagined lasering them in half... However what shows his true morals, or rather lack thereof, is when he chooses not to even save a single person off of the plane. Because he would rather go with the public excuse that, "there just wasn't enough time for me to get to the plane to save anyone.", Blaming time and circumstance itself rather than, "I'm sorry but I couldn't save them all..." Revealing his true limits to the world... Because again his image is the most important to him, and he would rather be faultless than weak.

In the comic he does try saving the plane on 9/11 by flying into it to steady it but ends up flying right through it instead and killing Marathon Man who was riding on his back in the process.

In the comic, Homelander is eventually dismembered by Black Noir. Noir in turn is hit by massed artillery fire using depleted uranium ammo. That just softens him up enough for Butcher to lever open his skull with a crowbar and rip a chunk out of his brain. But they ain't gonna be doing that in the show, what with killing off Black Noir already.
