My parents ran an exchange student company and every year we would get a group of middle schoolers from Japan. They lived in this big city and basically none of them, including their adult chaperones, had ever been to the countryside. So every year my parents would include a trip to a farm as one of the activities. It was adorable how excited they all were to see a cow for the first time.

Another aspect that gets glossed over is that rationing is a significant aspect of why British food has such a poor reputation. When you don't have much in the way of seasoning or fats available for over a decade it's no wonder your food culture basically dies. While the rest of Europe had the means to preserve their regular diet Britain, being isolated from its nearest trading partners by way of Nazi occupation or axis aligned governments, had extremely limited access to anything that makes food taste good and people just completely lost the means to cook palatable meals. Thankfully we're not in that position any more but it's had a real, lasting impact on the types of foods that are associated with us. This is also part of why British cook books from the sixties and seventies are so utterly dire: the idea of sharing food with people outside of your household was kind of new to many people and the British had become accustomed to subsistence foods so spectacle and exoticism were prioritised over flavour when presenting dishes at dinner parties.

There's a really good film on Netflix called all quiet on the western front, there's some scenes where soldier mid charging a trench they find a mess hall and just stop fighting to eat as much as they could, just handfuls of bread and honey, really gets across just how bad rationing was on the German front

I was not expecting that mid-ad at all, but it somehow fits so well with the channels style of content. I still need some confirmation, is Established Titles an actual company? Because I've been seeing comments on other creators being sponsored by them and saying that it's all fake.
@alexhando8541
@alexhando8541 Жыл бұрын
Established Titles is a proper company but their whole business is based on opacity. Basically, you are simply buying a lease to a tiny plot to plant a tree as the legality around calling yourself a Scottish feudal lord is sketchy to say the least. The Scottish courtesy title of Laird and Lady based on land ownership, and is *not* a substantiative title and thus does not have any legal recognition. One cannot simply walk into Scotland waving a paper that "entitles you" to being a member of Scottish gentry. Lairdships are only recognised by Scottish communities when there is a substantial historic estate which the Laird or Lady is entitled to (which Established Titles obviously do not provide). Established Titles' website claims that the company really does sell legitimate titles, based on the authority of Lord Lyon, King of Arms, the Chief Herald of Scotland (the person who deals with law surrounding coats of arms, crests and the inheritance of titles). However, reading the letter sent by Lord Lyon to the company reveals that since the titles Established Titles sell have no legal standing, they are effectively selling scraps of paper with the words "you are a lord" scribbled on them in felt tip.

Take a look into the development of vitamins. It’s slightly interesting They used to think palagra was a seasonal disease that was widespread in the American south. Turned out that there just wasn’t enough vitamins in the southern diet. The same way people get scurvy without enough vitamin C …they get palagra if they don’t get enough vitamin A (I believe. Might be a different vitamin) They figured out to just put vitamins in “enriched” food staples, like flour. To make sure everyone was getting enough vitamins And they learned you need vitamin D to absorb other vitamins and calcium so they started putting it into milk and stuff. - Even if there was enough variety of foods in their environments, that would satisfy their nutritional needs, large scale production of a wide enough variety of foods could be hard if people don’t really understand nutrition well enough.
@wyattcastle7225
@wyattcastle7225 Жыл бұрын
Just a small thing to note about Established Titles is that they don’t have the authority to bestow actual lordship. Even though they say you can legally call yourself a lord, you won’t be legally recognized as one. Technically speaking you don’t even need to buy from them to call yourself a lord. Essentially, all you’re getting is a tree planted in your name and a piece of paper that doesn’t mean anything legally.

My grandad worked in submarines during world war 2 in the Mediterranean. They somehow got hold of the whole load of bananas because they knew they were going home in a matter of days and it would be a great present to give people because people couldn't get bananas in England. However they got pulled into an extra shift and therefore couldn't return in time for the bananas to last. So everyone on the submarine just lived off of bananas. As they had all bought so many to take home to their relatives so there were loads. I asked him did anyone get sick because you can overdose on potassium. He said no .
