Ridiculous fan-theory time: the Thing keeps following MacReady around the world because the alien hive mind has developed a hopeless schoolgirl crush on the rugged, helicopter-flying Kurt Russell look-alike. It obnoxiously stalks him from one continent to the next, waiting for exactly the right moment to confess it’s feelings for senpai, never getting the message that MacReady just plain isn’t interested.
