Lavinia Warren was the 19th-century proportional little person who lived largely-and very lavishly. Despite being small in stature, she was huge in stardom. From her humble beginnings as a school teacher to her worldwide fame as one-half of a petite power couple, Warren did it all.

I dated a little person many years ago....I was never treated better by any guy. He was a gentleman and was gorgeous. Unfortunately, he never believed how wonderful he was..... We need to drop our prejudice against anyone that is a bit different.

One of my closest friends when I was young, was a little person. He was such an awesome human. He passed when we were ten. But he had the best personality, funniest jokes and a smile that could light a room. I miss Tony to this day and wonder what he would have been like as an adult.

I grew up in Middleboro. I loved the two portraits of Lavinia and Charles that were hanging in the library. I vaguely remember the other portraits but those were the two I remember. Helped a friend with the penny candy counter at the museum back in the 70s so was able to wander around and peruse all the exhibits. When people ask what our town is known for I say, "Cranberries (Ocean Spray) and "Tom Thumb"'s wife." Then I have to explain who Charles Stratton was.

I've seen it. Having once lived in Ma. Still living in a close state. I have done most tours of many cities and towns in 60+ years. Been to all states. Canada and Mexico. Always camouflage, folk festivals and tours to learn. History is good to learn. What I never believed in. Is using people's disabilities as a money making machine. Making it almost impossible to find work that can support them. Unless they are used as mockery. It's shameful.

People love to say that all "freak shows" were inhumane, but they fail to realize that at least P.T. treated all of the talent with dignity, respect, and fair wages. He gave the people who worked with him a far better life than the rest of the world ever would have. He gave them a home and family. Can you say that about your employer?

Hmm did he though? He exhibited slaves who he owned up to and including their autopsies. He hired “Tom” when he was 5 and lied about his age and bought him booze. When Tom got married he sold tickets to that too. Nothing belonged to his employees. Did you get all your info about him from The Greatest Showman?

Barnum was a temperance activist, Universalist Christian and advocate for equality. Barnum pulled his candidacy for Connecticut governor in 1853 due to the expansion of slavery into the western territory. Though he made his money in part from a circus, he likely believed it didn’t mean he could treat his employees poorly or unfairly as it was against his beliefs as a Univeralist. 🙂

We had a very dear friend who had maybe a similar problem. She was very small and her hands were mis- shaped. She was somewhat hump backed and might have had other deformations that one couldn’t see. She had earned her teaching degree but her parents wouldn’t allow her to teach because they were afraid that her students would laugh at her. She had a younger sister who was completely different from her. She was a large woman however she was perfectly properly for her size. They were both sweet ladies and loved 🥰 to babysit my little baby girl when I had to go to my doctor appointments. They were old enough to be my grandma.

I'm related to Lavinia Warren via my mother's side of the family in not one but two branches of my mom's family tree. Lavinia and her sister are in my family tree via a 12th great grandfather. Interestingly on my paternal fanily tree I'm distantly related, via my father's mother, to Eng and Chang Butler (famous Siamese twins) via their wives who were sisters. My grandmother used to tell me family stories about Eng and Chang, things about them that I've never read in print. If my mom had not tasked me to do genealogical research I'd never have known I was related to Lavinia's family.

People expected that any baby she had would be a tiny "fairy" baby because she was so small. She and her sister were both born normal size. Having a real baby would have killed her, as it did her sister. She remained celibate her whole life (despite her marriage) because she was terrified of dying in childbirth.

They were tiny babies, it would have been just like going to a baby sitters for them. It’s been proven that the first five years of a baby’s life are very important in laying down the foundations for life. A baby that’s emotionally traumatised and in these cases there are a lot of issues. Being brought up in an orphanage, taken away by complete strangers, placed on show and then returned are all very problematic for their future mental and emotional health. Granted it was in a world that didn’t know this and where cruelty was a part of everyday life.

Thank you, that was an interesting biography. It's very satisfying to know that a person in life who has a unique set of circumstances to deal with, finds love with another person who understands, as they too have their own load to bear. What a sad end for Minnie and her baby, although she would have been overjoyed at being a mother, and had the chance to experience it however briefly.

There is a book about her life. According to said book Commodore Nutt married her little sister and she died in childbirth. A death that Vinnie feared with every bone in her body. you see when she was a small child they had a cow on their farm with a similar condition as herself and her mother and aunt watched in horror as that poor little cow tried to give birth to a normal sized baby. Vinnie never allowed her marriage to be consumated and the series of fake babies they had while on tour broke her little sisters heart as she was the one who cared for them. it was this very thing that drove Minnie to seek motherhood regardless of the fate it could bring her. There was a song written about her death as it was so very sad.

Yes, the exploitation of animals. Just the fact that the bible gives us dominion over them makes me question that god. We are equals, they may even be our superiors, and I pray that people wake up to this and stop torturing and eating animals. If they have to eat them, make sure you gave them a good life first. We can use animal products without all the mistreatment, poisons, and torture.

WOW! I knew who Tom Thumb is, but had no idea he had a wife and a child! When people talk about him, they only talk about him, not his family. You said her sister gave birth to a large child, do you mean she gave birth to a child without dwarfism? If that's true, no wonder she didn't make it. I don't think c-sections were known at that time in history, but it wasn't very long after they started performing them. Back then, Dr's didn't check pregnant women like they do now. In the Victorian period, if I remember right, they still didn't know anything about the inside of people, especially pregnant women. The only reason they knew about mens' insides are because a man had a huge war wound in his stomach that left a large flap of open skin that could be lifted up and he lived, and allowed the Dr's to lift the flap and observe what happened when he ate, and did other things and they recorded it and made drawings. That's how they learned about mens intestines, but it would be many more years before they knew what was going on inside a woman.

The fact that you really looked for that fight footage and the fact that I was really looking forward to watching it. We're probably going to hell.. Enjoyed your video and the story. She was a beautiful woman who lived an interesting life.

Just FYI: being made a count (by a pope, a king, or anyone else) does _not_ make anyone "royalty". It makes them part of the *aristocracy* or *nobility.* "Royalty" is a separate category from aristocracy/nobility, and it applies exclusively to the family of the reigning monarch.

The pinniped on horseback in the footage is a Sea Lion, not a Seal - Sea Lions have longer front flippers than Seals; while Sea Lions can walk on their flippers, Seals can’t; Sea Lions also have ear flaps, Seals have ear holes.

At least Barnum portrayed these little people in a respectful way as talented and in aristrocratic, rather than as slapstick , vulgar show. It's great that they were able to meet the Queen and were well-paid. It's tragic that animal bladder condoms were illegal in the United States. Certainly these could have saved countless lives of high risk mothers.

I think it would have been nicer if they had the baby in the show and then at the end of each performance, they gave the child back with many beautiful photos from the performance and a little money to put ads out. The ads could have been looking for prospective families, hoping it would give them a better chance of adoption.
