William IV Was England's Most Obscene Monarch

When William IV became King of the United Kingdom in 1830, England didn’t know what it was in for. Bawdy, brassy, and unapologetically obscene, there’s a reason the history books skip over this “Sailor King” and his brief, dramatic reign: It was one hot mess. Strap in, King William IV was not your mother’s monarch.

The old "put it on my tab" ... "payment is guaranteed, Im the Queen!' ..... Getting individuals and companies to do things (no doubt costly) putting themselves in debt believing payment was a certain guarantee! There's your escaping the 'debtors' statement. Doubt she EVER had to take out a loan to pay for anything! She probably left a lot of people IN debt, broken, thrown in jail, suicidal or dead for her extravagant lifestyle.

Well said The LAST Monarch of England was Queen Elizabeth I. She was succeeded by her cousin Mary Queen of Scots son James King of Scotland ( yes he was that King James of biblical fame) this brought in the act of union his title was and remains King James VI of Scotland and first of England.
@ISIO-George
@ISIO-George 11 күн бұрын
@@amsodoneworkingnow1978 No. The last English monarch was Queen Anne. Up until the Act of Union in 1707 England, Scotland and Ireland were ruled in a personal union but were separate countries. In 1707 England and Scotland were joined as the Kingdom of Great Britain, and the monarch reigned over a personal union of Great Britain with Ireland. After the Acts of Union of 1800 these were joined together as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, a single sovereign state. Since 1800 the strictly correct title would be monarch of the United Kingdom, but it has usually been referred to historically as the British monarchy, and often (incorrectly) as the English monarchy. In modern times, after Irish independence the title became monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, in personal union with the Irish Free State. The personal union with Ireland weakened over time from 1921, and in 1949 Ireland de jure became a republic and left the Commonwealth, though after 1937 the monarch had already lost all but one ceremonial role in Irish government.

To dismiss George III as "the mad king" is totally disrespectful to those suffering from mental illness- if you research his life and actions carefully you will find that he was basically a very good man with a strong sense of duty and fairness. He was horrified at the cruelty of the English towards the Native Americans and his feelings on this issue set off the train of events leading to American independence- do the research properly- it's all documented

The problem with Queen Victoria’s mother was her adviser, Sir John Conroy. He was greedy for power and came up with the idea to make Victoria into a , helpless pawn, which from our perspective must look like a foolish idea. One of the first things Queen Victoria did was to banish Conroy. Victoria’s mum’s excuse for keeping her daughter away from the court was that the King had his illegitimate children around all the time, so he really didn’t have the opportunity to tell her off more privately. And he probably did think a public humiliation was warranted.

Not an Anglo or anglophile by any means but I am a citizen of THE UNITED KINGDOMS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND and a historian. The last fully ENGLISH Monarch was Elizabeth the first. She was succeeded by James VI ( of biblical fame) of Scotland. This lead to the act of union. While by then the premier title of Wales was and remains that of Prince of Wales Scotland had her own monarch going back to 500's James was the son of Mary Queen of Scots cousin to Elizabeth I who held her hostage 19years eventually having her beheaded. WhilE The Monarchs are crowned with the St Edwards crown it is in fact not the oldest crown in the kingdom's that would be the Scottish crown which alongside other coronation accoutrements remain in Scotland and are known as The Honours of Scotland. The monarch is presented with them but never wears them by custom. It would be fitting that changes when Prince William is crowned seeing as he is ( albeit through a base born daughter) mothers line a direct descendant of the Stuart Kings. So when he takes the throne once again those of royal Stuart blood will sit on the throne of The United Kingdom's of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It would be weekly and fitting to see him wear the honours of Scotland.

Your careless hyperbole and ill-judged use of adjectives renders this a rather low quality documentary. Referring to George III as 'mad' is simply insulting, today, and you would not use it of anyone still alive who was suffering from mental illness. William was not an 'upstart' prince. It was not 'unthinkable' that he became King in 1830, but normal, expected succession. The truth is that despite his faults and habits (which were not 'obscene' or unusual for a man of his class and time) William was an extremely popular monarch with the British people.

Adelaide, the capital city of the state of South Australia, is named for William's Queen. He himself is remembered in the naming of the main street, King William Street.

There is a hamlet called Queen Adelaide in Cambridgeshire, named in her honour. She iwas a good Queen and a well known benefactor supporting numerous charities. Queen Victoria relied on her as a mentor.

The Capital city of South Australia is named after Queen Adelaide. King William Street runs through the centre of the city. The streets that run perpendicular were name after commoners and King William demanded that the king's path should not be crossed by that of a commoner, so if you look at the map the streets have different names on either side.

The story is more complicated than that. William actually dropped is mistress and their children because the state promessed to clear off the debts of any of the Princes that would produce a legitimate heir. Anything he did was with the hope of getting more money

The only legitimate heir in the next generation Princess Charlotte had died in childbirth. There would have been a succession crisis. All of King George's sons left their mistresses to clear their debts and hope to father the next Monarch of Britian.

William VI was king of the United Kingdom not England. The Duchess of Kent, Victoria's mother, was a thorn in William IV. He got his vengeance on her by living past Victoria's 18th birthday.

It was pretty normal for boys to join the navy early, just as it was normal to start early in every trade, to work your way up from apprentice to master. For boys who wanted to become officers and had the family connections and money to get a place, it was normal to join at 13 since they had to serve 6 years at sea(2 of which had to be as a midshipman) before they could take the examination for lieutenant. This exam could only be taken if they were 19(or appeared to be).

I'm sitting in Brighton, a town that owes its existence to be louche, Prinny. Home to the first curry house in Britain, and still home to the fabulous Royal Pavillion. Imagine, if a bunch of gay interior designers dropped acid, and had oriental vernacular explained to them by short sighted idiots. Our government thought it's exterior homage to Indian Architecture, made it a suitable place to turn into a hospital for Indian Army troops. We also have always been very gay friendly.
