How Tires are Made
When Charles Goodyear discovered vulcanized rubber in 1839 by total accident, it changed the tire game forever. His invention started a snowball effect that resulted in the invention of air-filled tires in the early part of the 20th century. Today, factories produce more than 250 million new tires a year.

I worked for Goodyear back in 78 thru 82 just as they were shutting down the plant, built in 1938 I hired in as a General Operator and qualified on a Turret building Bias Ply tires, I also qualified on Truck tires and a total of 11 different jobs including first stage Radial tires, I changed bladders and sort and service as before they shutdown, they laid off and I got a few temporary jobs substituting for sick workers. I still have the little screwdriver for changing the tags inside the tire mold and of course a nice pair a scissors. Plus it was like hanging out in the neighborhood as I knew most of the workers. I loved working for Goodyear. But when they shut down I found another plan building Highways and bridges which I also loved.

That’s so cool! It’s an eye opener for me how complex the manufacturing process is. How does a tire plant clean its conveyors, rollers and bladders? Do the melted rubber leave traces on the surfaces over time that may cause problems to product quality?

They have a Maintenance crew, but the plant was old. Hot tires are not moving around. When you build the tire, I never wore gloves as that would have been a hazard. So the only time that they are hot is when they are in the mold. @@BKRSingapore

@Wardell43 Hi! Did you ever have health problems related to exposure of materials in the factory? I heard it's very toxic.
