the reason why he did that is because the question went like this x something - x something the formula for that is (x-b)(x+) that would be equivalent to to the question you just factored

Also refer to the difference of squares equation for trinomials. You have to pay attention to the signs, I think that's where you may have gone wrong. [ a^2 - 2ab + b^2 = (a - b)^2 ]
