The thing I really like about factorio is that a lot of these tips are really basic, so it's going to be a mix of "well duh" and "holy hell how did I not think of that", but it's going to be a different mix for everyone because everyone has experimented in different ways to solve the core problem sets every Factorio player eventually encounters. The thing that really got me was him pointing out you can just...have more than one armor.

As for the backup power for the outposts... My way is to create 2 timers - one powered from the main grid and the other from isolated solar panel with accumulator. Both timers are being reset every 30 seconds. When outputs of both timers are equal, it means that the outpost is powered from the main grid and backup power is disconnected. When main power is out, the timer powered from the grid will stop, while the one powered by the solar panel will still count and difference in their outputs can be used as a condition to connect backup power. This way you don't need to provide additional circuit network signal from the mail base.

@@Trupen I'm not worried about my factory being World Record efficient, but for example, it took me like 10+ hours per game between each new Research Pack, due to me not going as big or efficient as I could. I guess you could say I accidentally went for a "low pollution build"? Anyway, I'll probably do my own take on the blueprints you've shown: I literally stopped your watching one of your videos at one point, and spent an hour just scribbling various Furnace layouts on a white board to see what would work best for me. But some things I'll probably copy: like I didn't know you could place Boilers side by side without loss (I just assumed that would eat up more water than would supply the rest, so I have been giving each of Boilers their own water pump). Your videos have been super useful. The best way to "turret-creep" with lasers is to use Personal Laser Defense. If you run in circles around biter bases, you’re basically untouchable: spitters and worms miss you by a huge margin, and biters can’t hit you. If you feel like speeding it up and you’re confident enough to take the temporary speed hit, you can use any other weapon system while you do it: flamethrower for biters, submachine gun for spitters, combat shotgun for worms and bases, grenades, capsules, combat bots… Bonus points if you ride up in a Spidertron and park it nearby so it picks things off with rockets too. But then, this is Factorio. If it doesn’t scale, it doesn’t count. So seed your railway designs with artillery turrets (or artillery wagons, if you have some weird patrol route in mind), then spam artillery range increases until the automatic range covers all your pollution. Alternatively, use manual targeting to pound spawners into dust, send Spidertron to mop up worms and such, and take out other bases yourself while that is happening.

I fill my railway designs with accumulators. Sure, spitters tend to take them out when attacking, but they provide a useful cushion against sudden power interruptions, and with a pure solar setup full accumulators means wasted energy. For the most part, if your solar panels aren’t working at full capacity 24/7, the best way to upgrade your power is just placing more accumulators. That’s especially true in the late game, where beacon designs and laser turrets can make energy usage much more swingy.
