Weird History

2 жыл бұрын

In Ottoman history, Sultan Ibrahim I is known as one of the most extravagant rulers. Though he only ruled for a period of roughly eight years, his reign was defined by decadence, nepotism, sensuality, and, according to some, outbursts. Like many of the most captivating historical figures and celebrities, Ibrahim's life was tragic and curious.

This is why the empire collapsed. Starting with Suleiman the magnificent, every emperor started locking away or killing their brothers and sons. So when they died and the next in line would be incompetent thanks to being locked away all their life.

Well, not quite. The fratricide law was put in place by Suleiman's great-grandfather Mehmed II, and it more or less required all Sultans to take out their brothers to prevent civil wars between factions backing different brothers. This system was abolished by İbrahim's father, Ahmed I, who instead put the cage system in place, where the non-reigning royals were confined to their assigned royal quarters in order to keep them from amassing independent power so that the fratricide could be outlawed without political fallout... As the case of Murad IV and his brothers shows, it backfired pretty effectively at keeping princes alive and really took away the princes' ability to increase their political and military skills. It did let some of the princes develop decent extra-curricular skills like composing or carpentry, but it could be argued that the princes were doing just fine on that front back when they were actually allowed to leave the palace and got to practice rulership in smaller scales, like how Suleiman the Magnificent was goldsmithing pretty well on his time off.

@@darthralin I just came from watching the Netflix Docudrama Ottomans. Didn't know it was the same Mehmed II who started all this l, thought it was a thing started way back in the empire. It explains why there were so many pretenders held for political ransom by the byzantines or every other state around them during that time. Still Pretty fucked up though, because he basically wrote the Fatwa basically sanctioning the murder of all his children and children's children safe for one. That's a long stretch of justifying murder for a (barely) stable empire. They did last until 100 years or so, so who knows maybe he was right. Survival of the fittest and all. 🤔
@darthralin
@darthralin Жыл бұрын
@@Atom1cDude If that was all he did, he might not have stabilized the empire as much. But the fratricide law was a part of multiple measures to curtail the power of factions within the empire, while solidifying a centralized government. There were a bunch of smaller parts to it, but the fratricide law, the strengthening of the Janissary corps and the expansion of the bureaucracy of the state via the devshirme system are some of the big ones, and strongly curtailing the use of political marriages of the royal family with foreign royals or influential figures within the empire is another. All combined to try and ensure that the sultan wouldn't need to depend on any other powerbase inside or outside the empire. If the other measures had been less effective, the fratricide law just might have been the final nail on the Ottomans' coffin.

During the High Medieval age there were the serfs/commoners who were what we think traditionally as peasants and merchants, then Citizens who had important tasks (Royal blacksmiths who make arms for the kingdom, tax collectors, etc) and this was essentially the middle class. In-fighting between commoners and Citizens was constant while nobles Monarchs were tyrannical fat cats to whom those hated tax collectors gave all their money to and were almost entirely unaffected by the common laws everyone else had to follow. making the lower and middle class fight each other while the elite reap the rewards has sadly been the human condition for....ever. I don't think we've culturally advanced nearly as far from that time period as we have technologically.

Yep, it’s coming around full circle now - American is also due to crash soon. According to history they’re at the point when other countries like England and Rome fell and also show similar changes, like massive money printing/inflation and fighting between the “lower” classes, rich getting richer etc.

@@Cafeallday222 As an American, definitely...and I think Rome is the best example for America in that it will likely not totally collapse, but split apart, like Western Rome that fell to darkness and the Eastern Roman Empire becoming the Byzantines and enduring on as a civilization. America is still one of the youngest countries on Earth, it has never stood the test of time and most likely won't. Just like with Rome, its republic-based democracy slowly became an oligarchy, and the next step is dictatorship with an emperor, only they likely won't use the word 'emperor' its about the totality of a single person's power. Once one person has nigh-unlimited power over vast swaths of people, it's only a matter of time until the wrong person gets that power and dissolves their own country/government through corruption with no one to stop them. Revolution is the only way forward at that point for the people, and what comes out of it tends to be the anthesis of what came before.

Yeah I feel kinda bad for him in many ways - he had massive amounts of trauma that obviously messed him up for life. That doesn't excuse things like "drown your whole harem in a jealous fit," but all these stories of mad monarchs who should have never ruled in the first place, it's like, how do they not have rules like "hey if this person is a total mess maybe just put them in a fine house to live out their days and let the next person in line rule."

It's always so confusing to me when rulers like this exist and for years on end. I understand those in high positions of power below him wouldn't want to go against him too much because then that could topple the whole system that they're also benefiting from but... when they're this insane and awful? And literally not a single soul is safe? But they're also like individually a weak person and they don't even have like many strong body guards that super loves them? Like I'm sure he had bodyguards of a sort but considering how awful he was I find it hard to consider that they'd feel terribly loyal to him. Also because of his murdering there seems to be a high turnover rate so there wouldn't even be much time to build loyalty. I just don't understand why a different high-level politician didn't devise a coop or assassination.

"he should never have become ruler after going through that" Here's the thing tho... thanks to his brother's executions, Ibrahim was in fact the last living male of the Ottoman dynasty. Murad's final order to execute him would've made the throne pass to the Giray dynasty.

@@sou713 That last part is probably exactly why his mother didn't do it, because then she'd no longer have any power either. I'm willing to bet even she knew beforehand how madly the early childhood imprisonment left him, and thought all the better since this would make it easier for her to rule while he was being mad off doing mad things...which sort of worked. I think his brother is truly at fault though, if you're going to commit fratricide out of fear then at least do it all at once immediately when you gain power, not over time at your leisure.
