This hit the spot. Trying to feather just one edge of a mask. Using a gradient tool for the mask did the trick. Who knew?! Thank you 👏

This tutorial is missing a key detail. Read this. Review your layers. Create a layer underneath where your picture is. Put the colour you want there that you'd like the mask to be. Then double check when you are in the process of creating the mask to make sure in the colour picker it is the colour you have on that underneath layer.
