I think there was a problem with ground operation. Probably parking position was not ready or clear for A330. Then, ramp control or ground control instructed to the plane about move out from that position and wait remote position instead of blocking taxi area. When ramp was setup to parking position, A330 taxied to parking position once again. Thats all. Because of; Turkish Airlines generally always parking the same position (like as many other airlines if they are usual company). Pilots generally knows which gate/parking positions is available before landing also ground control says parking positions on initial contact when first contact. Airport also not complicated about to mixed parking positions. (if you don't know-I mean new guys and watchers in aviation- about this, yes it's true. Pilots talks with ramp agents on assigned company frequency at least 10-15 minutes before landings. So %99 parking ramp already known by pilots and ramp control/ ground control unless unexpected events)

I work for Ground OPS in TXL and was on duty this day, they simply turned onto 52 instead of 52A. Parking Spot was clear for a Widebody. Maybe first time TXL for these guys. Mistakes happen. About 2 month ago a TAP A319 rolled to far into A7 with his engine #1 directly under the gateway.. Simply because he was not familiar with the stopmarkings in TXL :/ We are all just human beings

hakan737, not a surprise to me. I have flown to an airport and it was about to go to the gate. The airline was forced to use a tow truck to push the plane back a long distance. The problem was another plane was already there and the traffic controller got the planes mixed up. The other plane finally left after 15 minutes. I'm glad it was in October because summer in my city can be very hot!

Don't Fail the Turkish Airlines pilot! This happens quite often when a flight arrives earlier than scheduled (tailwinds or other circumstances) its assigned gate may have still been occupied. Ground control should have been able to move the A330 somewhere else and avoid blocking the taxiway. You can see how confused are the "Follow Me" car drivers not knowing what to do and end up having the pilot follow them around the airport ramp until the ground controllers found a parking spot. This just shows me ground control didn't have a good plan

Don't blame TA pilot in command. He just followed that FM car. This is more like "tight schedule" issue of ground services, they obviously had hard time to assign proper gate to TA aircraft due to dense ground traffic and possibly because of packed schedule.

I only see someone assigning blame on the wrong party. There are no failures evident of any kind here on the part of the cabin crew. The Pilot was obviously directed to another gate for whatever reason. I have had the pleasure to fly Turkish airlines from the U.S twice on business, and found the airline to be professional, friendly and competent. Sure beats Air Berlin, the worst Airline I have ever flown on. Good riddance as they file for bankruptcy.

I'm certain ground control canNOT be blamed either b/c gate assignments are the purview of EACH airline's dispatch center NOT the airport. Listen to enough ATC ground transmissions, you will LEARN this. PILOTS are given GATE INFO, which they pass on to Ground (not the otherway around). When there is a "known problem with the gate assignment," Ground CTL MUST be informed so the plane can be directed somewhere else until the gate is ready; usually, the airline dispatch also provides the alternate holding spot. If not then GROUND can find one. It is NOT the fault of GROUND CTL.

I see no fail on this video other than the departing aircraft that made it impossible for the inbound Turkish flight to approach the gate to deplane pax….the inbound flight followed the same (A12) black and yellow checked FOLLOW ME vehicle from the taxi ramp to the gate where it was held up by the outbound flight having difficulties.... they then followed the same A12 from the gate area down the ramp to turn around and return once the outbound flight had cleared the gate area...this is NOT an airline fail but a Gate failure

To all those bashing ground handling: this was not their fault. The A330 just missed the correct taxiline. The parking spot was 52A, marked with a dashed taxiline clearly visible next to the nose wheels at 1:25. The pilot might have aimed for the taxiline to stand 52. After "overshooting" this point there would have not been enough space for the (partly visible, tail to be seen at 4:00) United 767 to be pushed back from from Gate A1.

We don't know the full story. I had a similar experience a few years ago with my private plane. Ground didn't know where to park me. Fortunately my plane only weighed 2000KG so repositioning wasn't a great problem. So the pilot of TA is probably not at fault.

The follow-me turned off at approximately the seam in the pavement (where the new/dark asphalt ends) and headed towards the marshaller, who is deep on the ramp beyond the chock / cone crew. The pilot turned in late and lined up on the right-hand wing walker. Nothing to do with ATCT failure or centerlines.

On Manchester to London Heathrow we are timetabled for a 00:35 (35 min) duration but frequently fly this leg in well under that time. Fastest time chalked up was in July 1990 of 00:18 but not by myself! With aircraft still on stand when we arrive at LHR ahead of schedule it's quite common to be just held on the taxiway until a stand becomes available. The normal procedure is to offer us First Available which somewtimes entails us having to taxi 'around the block' again to access a stand behind us. I think this is what we are looking at here: Looks odd I know. But nothing is wrong it's just that aircraft this size cannot reverse like the Boeing 737 / DC-9-32 has been known to and the Boeing C-17A likes to show off it's ability to at air shows! Cowelly :o)

It can be if you arrive way ahead of schedule like some of the eastbound TATLs do in Europe. Top non-UK locations I know of for stand switches to First Available are Paris LFPG / Amsterdam / EHAM and Frankfurt / EDDF. Worst for holding flights on the taxiway until booked stand becomes available are EDDM Munich / EBBR Brussels and EKCH Copenhagen. In the UK Gatwick EGKK is notorious for taxiway loitering but Heathrow EGLL depending on the time of day tries to accommodate earlies. Manchester tries it's best but unless you accept a remote stand is pretty pushed for space! :o)

LOL I was actually on this flight and asked myself what was going on. What a coincedence. Edit: There seems to be a discussion going on whos fault this is. By no means I'm an expert in this field, but I had good vision on the air traffic controllers. The pilot just took the left turn too late. Ground staff was ready. At 1:42 you can actually see how one of the traffic controllers had to step back and was signalling the pilot where his parking position actually is. As some comments suggested the plane didn't park somewhere else because the spot wasn't ready. The plane just taxi'd to the other side of the airport, turned around and then taxi'd back. (This part was cut in the video)

You don’t fly, do you? The fail was was with the Turkish crew. It’s typical, especially for a wide-body, to be told your parking stand 30 minutes or so before arrival. This can assist with exit planning (ie. braking anticipation) whilst still in flight and to spot any taxi restrictions. After landing you are normally given a parking position as part of your taxi instructions. In this case it probably would have included “follow the follow-me to Stand n.” At 1 minute 10 seconds the follow-me moved along the taxi-in line. Waiting on the end were the receiving ground crew. This Turkish crew missed them all. It happens, it’s no biggy. The one who missed it owes the other money a beer.

No. This wasn't anything to do with the plane or the pilot. This is very common at most airports, something wasn't ready on the ramp. So, in order to let the other plane through, it did a loop. This looks like the remote positions at this airport, which means there is no jetbridge so all the ground equipment used has to be brought in. The last thing you see being pulled by the tug in the video is the portable ground power for the plane, which usually is provided by the jetbridge.

The airport has passenger boarding bridges, but for cost reasons, this is of course saved. The aircraft were at the beginning of the video exactly where they have been at the end of the Video.

Correct, every airport has remote positions like this for extra capacity....It's normal. Just reiterating the events of this video, I believe it had nothing to do with the pilot, most likely it was something with the ground operations.
