PAL is a further development of NTSC and therefore PAL TV's can show NTSC picture, but not the other way around ...

Since the PU-8 motherboard has the unpopulated solder points for the few capacitors other components, and the DIN connector used by the S-video circuit of the earlier PU-7 board, do you know if anyone has tried retrofitting direct S-video to a PU-8? btw those unpopulated cap spots at 4:47 are for the S-video direct out circuit on the PU-7.

Yes, but there is quite a bit more to add than just installing the caps. There is also a filter (that's the 6 pin footprint above the not installed caps) possibly a 0.1uF ceramic used for coupling the chroma signal and some amplifier circuits built using discrete components just below the CXA1645 video encoder at the bottom of the board - these are the unpopulated pads on the left side and use the same parts as the populated buffer amplifier for the composite video that's the right of empty pads. I tried it, but honestly I couldn't see any quality difference between the Y/C output on the S-Video socket and the one that was already present on the Multi-AV connector.

@@TrimeshSZ I know it is pointless since the multi-out exists, I just thought it might be an interesting project. Good to know at least one person has pulled it off successfully. Thank you for the info.

I recapped 2 PU22 boards and it went pretty well. My first time installing all SMDs caps. Both my PS1s work like new!

I fully recapped and revived a PU-18 board to install an xStation, but that board seems much easier with less caps and not so tight placement compared to this.

Still more reliable than modern consoles... 😂

I really enjoyed my parallel port as a 12 year old with next to no money.
