Captain Power. What an amazing tv show was that. I was 7 when it came out. To bad it didn’t get the attention it deserved. The story line was top notch, pretty mature and dark. The toy line, amazing too!

I wanted them so bad... my parents were like "that is the cheapest looking plastic junk". (Same reason I never got any Visionaries vehicles) Anyway, I was a sucker for weird scifi shows so Air Raiders definitely had my interest first time I saw the commercials. No show... *sob* ... just some comics. The line deserved so much better.

Air Raiders is that one obscure line that has stuck with me since I first saw the toys in the discount section of TRU and Lionel Playworld. The play gimmick was so cool and interesting with the air hoses to launch the small vehicles, that damn glider, and the missiles. The back story from the instruction sheets and comics wasn't too bad either. Its also that toyline where you can pick up a majority of the produced figures and vehicles without destroying your life savings.

Parents Groups ruined everything in the 80's. I was about 10 years old when Lazer Tag hit. Everyone I knew hated Photon, and saw it as a knock off of Lazer Tag (whether it really was or not). So when we saw Photon toys, we didn't care, not because of price, but because it was Photon. As for Lazer Tag itself, it was HUGE. Everyone liked it because it had sleeker / cooler looking products. But then some kid my age pulled a LazerTag gun on a cop in Florida, when it was kind of dark out. Supposedly the cop saw the flash of green light at the end of the gun, so he pulled his real gun and shot the kid. It was all over the news at the time. And LazerTag got cancelled because of it. Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future was awesome, but parent's groups flipped out that it was "too violent." Not only were they triggered by people shooting at each other on screen, but they lost their minds over kids shooting at the screen. So the parents groups shot down that show too. Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light was also very popular. But the parents groups hated the action era, and wanted it gone. That's why at the end of the 80's they tried to bring in the Disney Afternoon, because it wouldn't "damage" us kids like Transformers and G.I. Joe did. (We were fine, btw). Of course a new action era would start up again about 5 years later with shows like Batman the Animated Series, X-Men, and Gargoyles. But Visionaries was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had it come out in 1992, it would have probably lasted longer.
@whosaidthat84

Amen! They screwed everything up when they got Congress to pass the law requiring kids shows to have "educational" content. I was born in 84, so I was too young to enjoy most of these toys in their initial release, but I was always able to find them in discount stores from 88-91. On top of that, many shows still aired in reruns but to me they were brand new.

Those kind of ''Karens'' are still around now trying to cancel everything. Even back in the 50s they got EC comics put out of business through their hysteria. Easier to blame external forces for kids bad behavior than have to look in the mirror and reflect on their own parenting abilities.

Captain Power fans should definitely check out the VHS games, as they were Japanese animated and insanely cool. I think Hasbro's mistake was making the Visionary toys bigger then GI JOE figures. As a Child my Joes and Star Wars figures interacted a lot because they were the same size, even if they didn't have the same articulation, especially using the vehicles. I also picked up a few Captain Power figures too, because they were close enough in scale (although the plastic felt more brittle to me) , but sadly I never got any of the vehicles but my friend had the ship.
@EdsRetroGeekOut
@EdsRetroGeekOut 3 жыл бұрын
I think so as well, they didn’t fit into the gijoe vehicles too often and some of the visionairies vehicles were giant
@scockery
@scockery 3 жыл бұрын
That was the problem with Air Raiders, COPS and Inhumanoids as well. I guess Air Raiders vehicles were too large scaled (compared to its characters) to be 3 3/4" but then it was a Hasbro invention, so maybe they could've made not so large scaled vehicles. I think the scales were that Hasbro didn't want to compete against itself. That's why Secret Wars weren't done Masters of the Universe scale, it was a flanker brand to compete against Kenner Super Powers.

I still have both Photon guns, and the Thundercats lair in their boxes. Ive had some quite big offers for the Lair. In fact im working on a deal for a Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Dwarf army in trade for it. My parents owned a toy shop from '76 to '97, and the incredible toys I found boxed away in our warehouse was incredible. My parents left it all to me. I recently started selling some of it off. I have a whole pallet of boxes of unopened transformers from the 80's, boxes of GI Joe bubble packs unopened, just incredible stuff my parents thought was worthless for decades.

Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys is another one that had a really good cartoon and toyline yet not only did it fail but it's nigh on forgotten! Like no one even saw it in the first place. I never see any youtubers talking about it and the series never got a DVD release. That, Skeleton Warriors and Visionaries really deserved better.
@shishoka
@shishoka 3 жыл бұрын
Captain Simian is best left forgotten. I loved the show... until the last episode. I remember watching the cliffhanger ending of the two-part finale, waiting a week to see the last episode... and seeing a rerun. Not until decades later did I manage to get the series with the last episode and jumped right to the end. Cliffhanger: Captain Simian abandons his crew in a difficult decision to keep the macguffin out of enemy hands which has been the malfunctioning sphere the entire time (that was predictable and fine). He lands on a barren world that looks lush and green to him and seems to grant his every desire. Finale: The dream world is two alien nerds using psychic powers to mess with him for the lolz (no, really, they were bored and thought it was funny). Captain Simian tells them to get a life (once more, literally) and goes back to save his crew... by handing over the sphere which the bad guy needs to become the universe/god. His plan fails because the sphere has been broken since the first episode. Reedus then takes over and chases the Space Monkeys because he hates them. That last episode was truly an insult. Completely negated the purpose of the entire series.

Just asking, but could you do a video on the trendmasters Godzilla line? It’s not from the 80’s but they were still cool

I had a Captain Power plane and action figure as a kid. It took forever to get the figure into the vehicle and he'd pop out when hit too many times. I once attacked my brother's plane while he was preparing it on the ground and he physically attacked me when I activated the eject.

Another great video, love it. As you can see, I'm a big Bravestarr fan and it's a great toyline for me. Unfortunately it was no success, but on the other hand, it's still possible to get a full set because there where not so many figures out. And Bravestarr is by far not so expensive like the MotU Vintage toys (currently) 😎

I was 9 or 10 when Captain Power came out. I had the good guy ship and my brother had the bad guy ship. That was a great toy. We got a lot of hours out of those toy's.

The late 80s (86-89) was so wildly competitive that it makes so much sense why so many toylines failed. Ninja Turtles were the kings, Transformers and GI Joe were still hot, and Batman was about to hit theaters. Plus, Nintendo and Genesis/Mega Drive were draining parents' wallets too.

I had the MASK Laser Command Set. It was boring compared to the toys shown in this video. I guess many toylines had to fail, as we had so many great lines already. Couldn't afford them all.

I've personally held that visionaries needed an extra feature like beast figures to represent their powers. Yeah the holograms were cutting edge. But they don't really lend much value to action play. Super naturals being these creepy cloaked figures. definitely kept it simple and spooky. I collect Captain Power toys, and had a few of them as a kid. Never saw the show other than the future force training tapes. Which did have some live action segments at the power base. But it was such an impressive production.

Holy crap dude I had some of those Super Naturals, I completely forgot about them, the name doesn't even ring a bell but I defo had the golden snake dude and at least one of the cloak little guys. There was a market by me as a kid and you would get all these lesser known toys real cheap. I got my Bravestar from there too. I also had a few Visionaries but I got them from Tesco I think (in UK)
