Here's how I learned that being the best isn't all it's cracked up to be.
While I was making this I found out that someone already did a video with this exact title. Go check it out! • Video

I know this will get lost in the comments and I think I will prefer it that way but I gotta say what this video means to me and how much it helps. I am not a popular kid at my school and I don't have any really good friends but for the longest time none of that mattered to me because I thought I was the smartest kid in my class and that alone was keeping my self esteem high. Well, that didn't last long because in my first year of high school someone came along smarter than me, and then another, and then another and I realized that I was no longer the smartest or the best at anything. As soon as I realized this I started having a mindset that I don't matter if I'm not the best at anything and started thinking I was a loser and unimportant and stupid and not worth anything. I've had this mindset for two years now and I've just come to accept it, but this video changed that. I never started failing in school or anything but I haven't really cared and have slipped down to low grades every once in a while. The thing is this video showed me that I don't have to be the best at anything to have self-worth, I just have to be a good person because I'll tell you that the smarter people than me are all jerks consumed by their ego and popularity. In the end It's the good people that succeed in life no matter how much the world tells us otherwise, it's the good people who really win at what matters most and if everyone would stop focusing on their own stellar abilities and just try to be a good person, then the world would be a better place. Thank you TimTom for making a video like this, it really helped me overcome my existential crisis I've been having for a few years.

@@PxndaCakes I still feel like a B is sub-par, because I felt like I could've gotten kicked out of the "extended" (yes, that's what they called it) classes if I got a C or a D. Nothing ever happened when I got a B, or even a C. And, even though C is technically "average, you're expected to do better than that in the *harder* classes (though you're still doing above average work) and ruin your self esteem and any joy you once had. I remember when I was in elementary school and I was known to be the one artist in my grade since I drew 24/7 and my characters actually looked semi recognizable. At some point some other students came to the school who also happened to be artists, and while it did somewhat worry me at the time I didnt care enough to get emotional about it. I figured i was still a good artist and I'd still be recognized for it. Later on we had this school store sort of activity where all the kids in my grade would set up little shops and we could sell stuff for school currency to use later on. I was giving kids drawing lessons on anything they wanted to learn to draw. I ended up learning that some other kid had set up an art lessons shop and was getting more money and customers than me. The only reason this bothered me was because he was teaching them to draw roosters while I was offering to teach them anything they wanted, and in my little 10 year old mind that meant others must have seen my art as bad now that there were other artists to compare me to. This never greatly effected me and I quickly got over it, but its still worth noting that I think this sort of desire to be wanted is something all kids experience. Every kid wants to be special or recognized for something at some point in their life, and I honestly wish teachers would teach kids to be proud and confident in themselves earlier on. Maybe teachers do that and I just wouldn't know, my elementary school was kinda funky and most of the teachers seemed to have an issue with kids (funny considering they work at a school). But hopefully someday kids will be taught that they dont need to be the first person to do something in order to be special. No one is the first at something, everything we do has almost certainly already been done before. But just because something already has happened doesn't mean it isn't special. There may be thousands of artists in the world, but having the capability to draw recognizable characters and figures is still a talent either way. This goes for all hobbies/interests.

This video hit HARD. I went through something like this with art, I really wanted to be the BEST at art in every way possible. But my friend was and still is SO SO SO much better at me in everything art related and that really crushed me so I stopped drawing for years because I thought I wasnt good enough to be good at anything. After a bit I fell into a deep depression. I have started picking up art for a few years now (like 2-3) and I have needed to take the time to tell myself that I don't need to be the best to do what you love, and I'm kinda getting back to my old ways of not thinking I'm good enough. But this video came at the perfect time and it really helped me. So no one is probably going to see this ( especially Tim) but I just wanted to say thanks Tim, keep being you💚

• CactusBeGaming • I was (and still am) in the same situation. I have a friend who I get a bit jelly over because I helped teach her how she draws now and she gets most of the attention. And it makes me kind of upset, I’ve always wanted to be known as the art kid in school so when this old friend of mine kind of took that spot instead of me it made me feel really bad. I don’t like her that much even though she is an okay person. And sometimes I feel really bad about myself since I feel like she is going places and I’m just here with “art block” and loosing my progress. I’m really scared to grow up because I don’t want to feel like I’m a failure. I’m probably just getting jealous and salty over nothing but it still kind of hurts. 😕

School isn't for me. My mother had gotten an email about me failing science class, ela, and math class. I can't do this anymore... She said by tomorrow she'll take the PC and bring it to her work place. School sucks. I have a bad sleep schedule and I try my best to sleep as early as I can. Too much homework stresses me out, and I can't take this anymore. I can't continue. I have two choices, learn or drop out of school.

I failed Algebra 1 in freshman year. I had to redo it in sophomore year. Last year I did both Algebra II and geometry and I somehow passed because of my hard work. I’m not even that good that at math but I was able to do it. You can do it! My advice is for you is if you are taking both classes at the same time is to keep your work separated in two different binders and keep a good schedule on what is due on each day. I know it’s overwhelming but you can do it

Thanks Tim, I know this comment will probably be drowned out but on the off chance that you do see this, I hope you know that you're making changes to the world and helping people in ways you'd never think, Keep it up

I don’t want to talk about how I was in elementary school. It really messes with my brain and makes me so ashamed when I think about it. I was truely a dumb kid. It’s been so many years and I’m soon to be a senior but I still cringe looking back at my young self. I am on the autism spectrum so I’ve struggled my entire life and I used to be worse before I matured. Every time I was stressed or didn’t want to do something In school I tried to run away. I couldn’t even think I just ran to the bathroom or another place and tried to lock myself in. The thing is when I did it I got what I wanted. I was able to go home it didn’t have to do it. So I kept doing it. In middle school I did it once and I got a lunch detention. I realized how dumb I was to run away from my problems and I don’t do it now. I was so dumb. Also I used to not put much effort into my work and I didn’t pay attention in class. Middle school and High school were really a wake up call to me to Focus and improve. Even after All that and I thought I was invincible since I matured a bit I failed Aldgerbra 1 in freshman year. I failed because I never turned work in and I procrastinated. In sophomore year I redid the class and actually began to enjoy math since I knew what I was doing. Last year in Junior year I got Up to date on math and did both Algebra II and Geometry at the same time. I worked hard and studied. I ended up getting As and Bs in those classes. The thing is that I’m not even that good at math but I learned to enjoy it and get my work done so I could focus my time on things I enjoyed more. I learned from my mistakes and now I’m a better person who has learned they need help with time management and strategies to help me with it. But what matters is that I’ve matured and don’t run away from my problems anymore like I did in elementary school because I learned better coping mechanisms for stress and feeling overwhelmed. You can do it guys. If your struggling you will overcome it eventually and end up being a more mature and improved person. Without that struggling all my life I wouldn’t be who I am today. Sorry for venting and sorry if my comment is all over the place

I didn't. I was a "genius", a perfectionist, and I was HATED for it and called a tryhard or a kissass or idiot. I wanted to be dumb and get lower grades, and when I did, I was HATED for it and called stupid. Basically, my school was borderline emotionally and mentally abusive towards me and me only (objectively, trust me, I knew everything about everyone, easy when you're invisible to those that are supposed to care for you and protect you). How about your school?

This video means so much to me for so many different reasons. This is a message that NEEDS to be shared because even most days I still find that I myself dont realize this. You are special simply for still being here. You can make someone's day by just saying hello. Defending them in a comment section. Giving a stranger a smile in passing. But that's not all-- be kind to yourself too. Trying your best for yourself is what makes it all worth it. Remember that you're worth more than what you can give other people, and even if you aren't "gifted", you still have value because you're HERE. So in conclusion Nobody: Me: *cries from a storytime animation*

@buggyhuman

This actually really helped me. I was an eighth grader this year and ive been 1 year ahead in math for the past couple years of middle school.. But Algebra this year was really difficult, and i had a hard time staying afloat in the class with my bad sleep schedule, my often misunderstanding of the teacher, and bad test test scores that made it hard to get a C or above. Then when the virus that will not be named struck i lost all control of my class. I had an even worse time trying to understand all my teachers new methods of teaching, and emails, and google classrooms, and articles, and sleeping until 3 in the afternoon to still be groggy and unmotivated that i failed algebra. Its really hard seeing my friends surpass me, and my cousins showing me their perfect grades. But it will be ok. I will take the class again next year and understand better. I will get a better grade, and manage my schedule better. Hopefully i will be more used to online learning, and will see my friends again in person hopefully soon. Edit: spelling and thanks Tim Tom for the heart! Edit number 2: Apperently when you edit a comment that a youtuber has liked it disappears 🙃

Thank you for this message. I used to be good at school but now I’m in 6th grade and now not doing well. I have 3+ missing assignments a week and I do things at the last minute and I’m about 13th in class. Plus, my parents call me someone who doesn’t think/a jackass/dead weight and it crushes me to think about how my parents feel. I always want to ignore them at any cost but they always barge into my business. I started to feel like I’m such a failure to my parents and that even though with A’s and A-‘s, I would not be good enough for a job because my parents kept discouraging me. This video sent a message saying that many people think they can soar through the sky with flying colors, yet get discouraged and feel like they should be like a dog, sticking to the floor. This video made me express my feelings to my parents and now they encourage me instead of discouraging me. It showed me that my feelings count and that I should try again even when I get knocked down. It showed me personality is better than intelligence. Thanks again. (People may ask how this story relates to the video and it is in many ways but it’s hard to explain them)

This will totally get lost in all the comments but I live in a place where expectations are high. If your not in the advanced math class your dumb. If you don’t know everything after only going over one time your stupid. If your average your suck. And as you could probably guess, I’m quite average when it comes to grades. I like to think I’m a very friendly and happy person (don’t we all) but to other kids in grades that doesn’t matter a whole ton. This video really helped me because I know that I don’t need to excel to be a good person, but it really helps knowing other people feel similar. It really hellos when those other people are people you look up to in life. Thanks Timtom I needed this.
