The Miramar still leads around the Endurodrome after all these episodes, but can the much requested Dove do much about it ?

Every night, me and my 2 year old son sit in bed and watch these "Driven Till Destruction The Endurodrome " series. It's really sweet how much he loves it. We are currently up to this video that I'm commenting on now. Still a fair few to go which is nice. Please do more 😁!!

I'll say this now so people don't get confused; The Blackfoot was released late yesterday, but since Alex is now on holiday, he had recorded both of the two next Endurodrome episodes before he left. So the Blackfoot might be featured in the Endurodrome episode/week beginning the 24th September.

I'd love to see the same car run this 3 times in a row to see how consistent the distance traveled is. between human errors and math rounding errors, there's virtually no chance of the car failing 3 times in the same 1/10th of the track area, but how accurate is a single run for determining the toughness of a car? Will it fail on lap 1 one time, lap 8 the second time and lap 3 the third, or will it be much closer like all deaths within about 1 lap of each other?

10:00 "Big Bopper to March Hare - we're out of the game. And you'd better send a meat truck - Charlie's copped a saucepan in the throat!" (Yes, I'm a fan of Mad Max, particularly the first one, as you can probably tell...) Was kind of hoping you'd recreate the original Mad Max car chase by crashing the Falcon into a Mazda Bongo van, & smashing through a caravan with it ;) But seriously, great vid, as always. Keep up the great work :)

So the Dove is a bit like the Reliant Kitten, same as the Pigeon is the Robin, right? Though essentially it looks rather like a squared-off RWD Renault 4 (though it ended up more like a 2CV Mehari). Despite clearly having a rather more OP engine than any of those (looks like the 0-60 on a regular track would be 10 seconds or less), it seems to share quite a bit of the chassis design, which I think is both the secret of its resilience and the reason behind its wonky handling, especially as the suspension appears to be rather simpler than even the R4s (which it can get away with at the front, and is forced to adopt at the rear, because of being RWD). From what I can see of it in the video, the chassis is a simple but extremely rugged ladder frame (or maybe an R4 style Platform Frame, makes little difference to an underside view), which provides a lot of stiffness to the lower body in general and particularly the places where running gear attaches. It also inherently protects the driveshaft (and gearbox), which has been the downfall of a lot of FR cars. The fuel tank is tucked away higher up than the chassis beams so is only in danger from a severe tailstrike. At the front, there's some kind of slightly oddball and not entirely clear double wishbone thing going on (simpler and bulkier than the R4's McP struts, but not necessarily poorer performing, and grant extra strength to the steering and front wheel attachments), and the subframe or dead-axle-like crossmember tying the lower parts of the left and right wishbones together provides a pretty effective shield for the engine (and high mounted radiator). At the rear, there's a pretty crude live axle plus leafspring setup that looks more like it suspends only the bodywork over the chassis, meaning the entire rear half of the chassis counts as unsprung weight and makes it into the equivalent of a hardtail motorcycle with a heavily sprung seat, which gives rise to all the chronic handling problems - the wheels can't move independently of each other except through tilting the entire frame, and are essentially unsprung (so can't move to maintain decent grip on uneven surfaces) other than by their balloon tyres, which is a bouncy and almost completely undamped setup in the first place. On top of which, the bodywork is sprung but undamped thanks to the leaf springs. But on the plus side, this does allow for the wheels to be very securely attached (just bolt them on the end of the halfshafts), and the live halfshafts and diff are quite well protected in the same way as the main driveshaft and engine/transmission; they're within the actual chassis frame, so for anything to hit them would require either a wheel (maybe both) to come off, or the car to suffer a very unlucky hard landing following a bounce where it just happened to crash down onto a rock that was positioned just-so to avoid the wheels and frame but still hit one of the vulnerable parts. A very hardwearing design, really, just not one made for any kind of challenging handling conditions ... or really any kind of high speed. It could last for decades on not particularly well made roads, without even needing an undertray (though fitting one to that frame would be simplicity itself) so long as you made sure to keep your speed down so it wouldn't bounce around too much. And if you look back at it, it actually behaves itself quite well at the front, it's only the back end that bounces around rather like a factory-built jelly car (though that's maybe the wrong analogy... rubber car?). If it had a slight modification to narrow the frame at the back and implement a kind of semi-live axle, with the wheels actually suspended in some way (even just the same leaf springs, though any of coilovers, R4 style independent torsion bars, or maybe even miniature wishbones with some kind of token damping would be preferable) with universal joints running from shorter halfshafts poking through the frame (you'd get a 2CV or Beetle style issue with the wheels changing camber as they moved up and down, but it'd still be an improvement), it could be almost as strong and underside-impact resistant, whilst not bouncing around anywhere near as much, and being able to put its power down more effectively... meaning it would crash a lot less, and be able to sail over the rock beds more easily, and so net resilience to bad roads would actually increase. Something like that might still be running around the Endurodrome to this day, laughing off the potholes and jumps...

+Jean Marceaux Yep, it became the Interceptor in the original Mad Max. It wouldn't have been a very old car then but apparently they weren't hugely desirable so they could be bought for pennies. I was just thinking how ridiculous it would be to have a chaser on this course. For instance you could spawn the car you're testing and then have like a high powered Burnside cop car or better yet you could have a cop version of whatever the currently leading car is and set them to chase the car you're testing. It would make for some hilarity I'm sure so long as the AI didn't derp out on the course.
