That final segment was really Alex going (translation) "I'm a pretty damn good commentator, with over a decade of experience. But even I have not the faintest clue as to why Beam decided that my perfectly functional car.... should no longer be a perfectly functional car. Your guess is as good as mine. Until next time and goodbye....." (P.S. It was probably Amy not wanting me to win)

Next time it'd be nice if Alex pre-set the display gamma (in beam) a little higher and left the postprocessing alone. The actual near-blacks in this were still pretty muddy but all the highlights were washed out, whilst upping the gamma should do the opposite somewhat, without making it too obviously overbright, though the daytime may seem a little glarey. It'd make for a good cityscape / industrial area night time vibe. I was quite pleased that his first instinct was to go across to Spearleaf when the sun set though, that was exactly what I was thinking would be a cool thing to do as soon as he noted the daylight fading out.

@tahrey Ай бұрын
Nah, I played it back a couple times after reading this, and I can't see anything that would be bullet trails or the like (don't know if Beam even shows those anyway?). The flickering sky and such is just replay artefacts, I think it only checkpoints the model data in sync with the framerate of whoever was recording it (which in this case wouldn't have been Alex as his replay recording clearly wasn't running at the time) and the engine interpolates from that - quite glitchily - if you run in slow motion. It being multiplayer probably only adds to that corruption. Most likely it's because it's a hillclimb / time attack car which already sits very low to the ground with a lot of protruding aero parts, which had got damaged and had some debris visibly tucked under, that hit a very slightly misaligned bit of the modelled road surface, caught on it super hard like some Beam collisions are wont to do (there was some video I saw recently which had a really egregious example of that which caused the entire car to ricochet backwards almost as fast as it had been going forwards, but can't remember if it was an FR one) but without sticking, and most of it got fired sideways as a result whilst the already loose parts of the bodywork carried on forwards. Be worth driving over that same spot in some ground-scrapingly low customised vehicle and seeing if it gets caught...

Limited slip differential is a must in such a game
@1mariomaniac
@1mariomaniac Ай бұрын
I feel like the Claria had a limited-slip (otherwise no power would've been getting to the remaining wheel). Just the way it was configured didn't seem to let the car keep going from a stop.
@tahrey
@tahrey Ай бұрын
@@1mariomaniac Beam *might* model getting some traction from the hub rolling on the ground? Which would give you a bit of movement, even with an open diff, but very slow. And then some resistance against it which would push a little power into the surviving wheel to gradually get up more speed. Though my experience with LSDs in Beam has been that they generally don't seem to transmit anything more than quite token power to the loaded wheel even when the unloaded one is spinning at unreasonable speed, and usually don't have any adjustment, though it still doesn't make much difference even if there is some. It'd be nice to have some stiffer options to sit between "very nearly useless" and "completely locked"... Or even some ESP / e-diff functionality that independently brakes a spinning wheel using the ABS system (and in doing so forces torque back to the other side), rather than simply using throttle-cut traction control, much as that would be era inappropriate to anything other than the hillclimb car in this vid. However if you've had the entire wheel complete with brake drum / disc come off, like what happened with the Claria, it's not going to do much good anyway. I wonder if it even simulates a dual circuit brake system properly, so if you have the entire assembly ripped off one corner like that, the braking force rapidly disappears from the opposite corner and leaves only the other two working? (And maybe in this case also kills the parking brake)
@tahrey
@tahrey Ай бұрын
Re: Gearbox issues, mentioned this a few times by this point, but IDK if you even read the comments that often so here goes again - *You gotta take the gearchanges **_slower_** in certain vehicles like this that have less than race spec transmissions, and by that I mean **_hold the shift button longer._* I know it goes against every hardened sim racer instinct, but that's how the Beam devs have the game engine set up at the moment. The period where the button is held is considered as the stick being held between gears, where you're letting all the internals sync up with the clutch depressed, and it only then gets shoved home and the clutch released when you let go. I think this is also why block changing doesn't work very well a lot of the time any more, because it doesn't properly recognise you double / triple tapping as an instruction to directly change up/down two or three steps, but instead an attempt to make two or three very rapid individual shifts? As a comparison: For a race transmission you can just tap it and that'll be like quickly banging up or down through a straight cut box, and the only "synchro" damage it should take is if you try to go into reverse when moving forwards (more actual gear damage, but that's how Beam counts it). For more typical road cars you have to give it just a fraction of a second for the synchromesh to do its thing, but that's pretty much the equivalent of a distinct morse code "dot" vs an instant click (mind that I do drive with Manual Assist on, so usually don't use the clutch, but that CAN still help for faster shifts for some dumb reason, very rapidly go hold clutch - tap shift - release clutch, total time to do all that still being slightly faster than the slow press of shift alone and bypassing the power and time-wasting rev-matching Beam otherwise insists on). For something stodgy like a truck, you need more a morse "dash". Still not super long, not even the length of a Eurotruck shift, but maybe a quarter to half a second could be enough to make the difference between it being clean and it grinding then jamming, or dropping into neutral. The clutch also helps, but more to let you get back on the power quicker by bypassing the revmatch hang time. The range splitter isn't so much of an issue overall. Using it could help with shortening the hang time in the upper gears, but if you have only one button bind that you can easily make, and you're not pulling trailers, the clutch is probably more useful to help with launches and all of the gearshifts. Really it's meant to let you keep near peak power more of the time when slogging up a steep hill with 20 tons behind you, or within the economy rev range when cruising long distance. The one place here it might have a benefit is going from 4th to 5th, as truck boxes tend to have more evenly spaced ratios than in cars (so effectively it "feels" like 1st - 2nd are closer than most familiar transmissions, and 4th - 5th are wider) because that better fits their use case, just to avoid bogging down on the hills so much... but really you may be as well just to let it rev out more in 4th before shifting (slowly!), or leave it in Low all the time. After all if 4H is too short but 5H is too long, somewhere in between the two should work, right? And there'll be an even progression up to it from the 4 lower gears. It'd make reverse a bit slower but it's not like trucks go very fast backwards anyway. And/or try different diff ratios in combination with that.
@tahrey
@tahrey Ай бұрын
(Maybe at some point they'll _properly_ model real world truck box behaviour and shift patterns (e.g. dual range with additional split on one or both ranges, that has shiftlogic that lets it be easily shifted between the top of low and bottom of high without needing an actual H-pattern controller), but not holding my breath. Until then the best option is probably something like this, but perhaps with 8/9/10 main ratios that represent the gears in both main ranges arranged sequentially, and you roleplay not having much real use for Lo gear in high range, or not being able to split the lower ratios, etc. Something like that works OK for the Optidriver type semi-autos in Eurotruck, where it takes an 8-speed with high-only or dual range splitting and presents it as a sequential 12 or 16 speed (or a 10-speed with high-only split as "12+2"), and you can double/triple/quad tap the shifter very quickly to make block changes, effectively choosing how big a ratio gap you want on each shift (generally wider in the low gears and narrower in the upper, though it's useful to have the single shifts for low speed heavy hauling in hilly areas, and block shifting into top from two or three gears down when running bobtail and hitting the speed limiter))

NB have you tried getting a mini wireless keyboard to sit next to you whilst you're using the controller, or having some kind of streamdeck profile that could make it work as a secondary button panel in-game and be more convenient than leaning over to the main board you use for chat/commands? Beam has so many different controls that are routinely useful that I find there's not really enough keys on a keyboard in the first place, let alone trying to map everything onto a joypad. Once you've done throttle, brake, steering, shift up/down, handbrake, camera angle, horn, lights, reset, menu there's like... the D-pad and up/down on one of the sticks left (if you want to play dangerous with the possibility of accidentally triggering something whilst steering), and one of the pad directions is already taken for ignition. I guess hi/lo range, diffs and clutch would be my personal choices, but I've likely forgotten some vital feature in all that, and it still leaves things like 2/4WD, drive mode, shift mode, getting in/out of a vehicle, pause, slowmo, indicators, aux lights/siren, attaching/detaching trailers, freecam, no reset teleport, cruise control... etc... up in the air. Those alone could pretty much fill a 16-button deck.

You only need the splitter if you're heavy and need the extra torque. And by heavy I mean, carrying a load. unladen it should be happy sat in High-range. The issue as alex says, is that he has not bound a clutch to his controller and you do need to clutch if you dont want to throw through all 10 gears.
@tahrey
@tahrey Ай бұрын
@@DAFPvnk The gap between 4th and 5th is pretty big though, there's points where it may have been useful to go 4H - 5L - 5H maybe, just to get the extra power (which is torque maintained at higher engine speed so you can use a lower gear and get more multiplication). Or just leave it in low range throughout, as there wasn't any point where he really got up to speeds that would exceed what you can do in 5L with that extended rev limit, and it wouldn't have bogged down so much.
