I honestly loved that Channary was just as bad, if not worse than Levana at least before Levana became the tyrant we know. There were scenes where I was more scared of her than I was of Levana than in the main series. I'm so used to the "deceased mother" being this kind figure, and while she showed motherly affection to selene/cinder when she was a baby, that fact that she was also a horrible person is so unique. Minor spoiler: Like that one part where she has her seamstresses's feet removed. Like it's mentioned so nonchalantly and I was just thinking if she did that then what had she done to her other servants?

Also, the first time I read this I (somehow) missed out on how much Levana was using her manipulation on Everet. I think this book showed a great example of a woman abusing a man which doesn't get talked about a lot in fiction or in real life.

@@stardust1815 love all these points - they did make the book unique and they really made Levana a more layered character - simultaneously feeling bad for her because Channary was so horrible to her while also being so angry at her because of how she treated Everet gave the story an emotional depth I was not expecting from a novella

I loved the contrast between her normally versus her with Selene??? Like total whiplash once it was shown that Channary was kind of a good mother, taking care of her when she could have just given her to the servants. I thought it added so much depth that I didn't expect from the "evil sibling" character. agree with everything you said, Channary was a fun character to read
