"There are hundreds of different kinds of yao. You can clearly distinguish which ones are good and which ones are evil. Humans only have one heart, yet it is so unpredictable." When I saw the trailer for this at the end of 2018 and knew that it was about yaoguai, it became my most-anticipated animated series, and boy it did not disappoint. It exceeded my expectations, and turned out to contain a bunch of my favourite themes: Sad, tragic, bittersweet stories ✔ Yaoguai and their deep bonds with humans ✔ Talks about human nature and causes self-reflection ✔ An MC that seems to be neither good nor evil ✔ Not to mention that the music is so good. I wish there were more shows like this one, and I was surprised when I learned how unique this is. I thought this would be a theme that many people would have used already. Several people said that _Bai Yao Pu_ reminded them of _Mushishi,_ so I decided to check that one out. I definitely see the similarities: episodic series of a person travelling around helping those affected by supernatural phenomenons. But I find them to be very different from each other. Ginko from Mushishi mostly helps humans (I only remember one episode where he helped a mushi, and that happened to be the very first episode of the season, and it misled me into thinking that most of the episodes would be like that, because I don't remember it happening again after that first episode), while Tao Yao mostly helps yaoguai with their illnesses and requests, which only happen to be related to humans. It seems like most mushi are more harmful than good, considering the great inconveniences they cause humans. They also don't seem to be as sentient. From season 1 to season 3 of Bai Yao Pu, there were only about six instances of yaoguai harming or being an inconvenience to humans, sometimes on purpose and sometimes unintentional. More times than not, yaoguai were the ones harmed or inconvenienced by humans. Tao Yao, Mo Ya, Gun Gun, and Mr. Liu are also more fun to watch because of how much they bicker with one another. Poor Ginko seems so lonely. Mushishi also talks a lot about abstract philosophies that tend to confuse me quite a bit. Almost every story in Bai Yao Pu struck my heartstrings, some made me tear up and sob. So far Mushishi has only managed to make me feel empty afterwards. I'm still looking for other animations like Bai Yao Pu. EDIT: Just saw some people in the comments bringing up Natsume's Book of Friends. I'll definitely check that one out. Already added it to my list.
