I have had similar problems with paint cracking and retaining water under it on my newly acquired old wooden boat. It would appear that modern plastic or epoxy yacht paints do more harm than good on old wooden boats. So, I am now refinishing the boat using traditional oil based paints and varnishes in particular, linseed and tung oil based. This type of paint is well-proven on old wooden ships here in Scandinavia to be better at preserving the wood, is durable, and easier to maintain. You may wish to consider this for your hull and wherever else the wood is suffering. Keep up the good work!

I've got a 60 year old wooden boat. I started following advice from a guy that's owned wood boats far longer than me. "Finish one project at a time. Those successes will keep you going. I've seen lots of people go too deep to fast into wooden boats and get disillusioned pretty quick" I've enjoyed my maintenance more ever since.

@@ATARI_1962 Good advice. I have met my boat's second owner, who was a broker/yard mgr for many years, and currently lives aboard an old wooden sailboat. He told me early on to think of it as a job, prioritize, to finish what I start, and to not disturb things too much, lol. I admit I have been jumping around a little, but mostly due to weather, materials availability etc. But yes, wrapping up a sub-project before moving on is wise...and it feels good.
