The C64 demoscene never ceases to amaze me after all these years. It's so astounding how much these talented people can get out of that hardware.

0:10 Bitmap background layering in multi-color mode, with a shine effect using a single sprite Text are sprites. (21 possible characters per row, with 3 rows, 7 24x24 sprites.) 1:45 Using hi-res mode, math is used to calculate how big each block of color should be. Bitmap graphics are used here, as it requires a buffer. It only scales after the original image has stopped moving. 2:03 Just a simple multi-color mode image here. 2:40 This ball is a sprite. 2:49 Text is shown in bitmap multi-colour, where each column contains two rows of text placed at different Y positions, while also scrolling. 3:25 Sprites are rendered as particles before disappearing and drawing in the background. 3:54 This sphere is animating multiple frames, with the color cells changing to give the illusion of rotating donut. 4:28 Cubes are pre-rendered sprites. 4:55 That loop is also a pre-rendered array of sprites, using all 8 per scanline, with a maximum resolution of 192 out of 160 pixels wide. 5:43 Color cells inverting. 6:17 Basic image scroller while the next disk loads 7:57 Basic bubble sprites moving. 8:08 Can't explain that. 8:45 Text characters scrolling, with alternating color cells. 8:55 Static effect altering the framebuffer. 9:01 Fake Commodore boot screen made to appear smaller. Select few cells altered to make the cursor beep. 9:18 Rotation done with different sprites for each direction. 9:56 One image, or roughly 4 animating images, made to scroll, uses cells to show different colors for each thing. The whole screen is affected, as there's 3 scrollers at once. 10:55 3D rendered disk, using just text as a frame buffer. 11:32 Animation. 11:53 Same as 3:54 and 10:55, just the top half isn't affected. 12:22 Bitmap image uses 3 colors per cell to make way for scrolling columns. 13:05 Two images scrolling together. 14:03 Credits are sprites, this time, all 8 are used.

"Bitmap background layering in multi-color mode" - Please elaborate.

@@hanzohattori7058 It means that two backgrounds are layered together using software.

8:08 Can't explain that. Simple, bubbles are sprites, white, grey, and black colors are vertical strip in text mode slowly scrolled up, letters are inverted mask sprites moving faster up over grey stripe with wawes made by changing x position on every scan line. Of course, sprites are multiplicated vertically.

4:28 while I'm no pro of C64, I think that part also used the built in sprite enlarger, a feature(which is also in the sms) since those sprites look chunky when they're larger

HOW is even half of these effects possible? Like how?! You guys are amazing. Your demo rocks. Scrollwars rocks!

Freaking amazing demo. I sometimes keep it running on my livingroom raspberry pi setup, and the soundtrack is perfect at subtle volume in the background. Can listen to it for hours on end.

8:08 as a non programmer, I think how this is done is (well, the bubbles are sprites & the seemingly wide area is done by changing parts of the border blue to match up with the play area (to which explains why no bubble seems to leave the usual screen real estate.)) Is that the scrolling diagonal striped lines are drawn first, then the text is drawn by having the 2 color background (blue & transparent pixels) layered on top to create the text whilst a wavy raster effect is being ultilized as the layer software scrolls, leaving the background unaffected by the ultilized raster effects. That's my guess anyway. ( & the tv & is a sprite as it falls down with the sharl being likewise but transitions into a background when it's much closer to the screen).

5:43 I like how with simple colour changes, it looks like that skull will break out of the box it's in & take over the whole screen; yet, it just stays the same size!😂

The C64 was such a good computer in it's time. Great memories with that computer. Wonder how it would be like today if Commodore had survived.

It's unfortunate that early color TVs didn't provide separate RGB or even Luma/Chroma inputs. Graphics tech might have advanced more quickly. NTSC/PAL/SECAM only inputs really held things back.
