Thanks for taking the time to comment and the positive words. The Society is hoping to do more things like this in the future, and feedback that the project is finding a niche will help that move forward!

I remember that the street through the park would be closed after a snow and you could sled right down the muddke if the street.

Forgot all about that! You are so right, they did. Also was ice skating with a warming hut that had a coal stove to keep warm.

What was once a grand park now not so much. Used to be able to sled ride thru the main road. Haven't for years.

Are there old maps of the park? It would be kind of cool to have an idea where foot traffic was heaviest back in the day for my metal detecting adventures. I've gotten a few very old coins out of Hanscom Park but that park has been hunted by many people many times. My best honey hole by far has been Columbus park in Omaha, I've found so many silver coins and wheat pennies there I doubt anyone ever thought to hunt that park for some reason.

It seems the most bustling part of the park in early times is an area that is virtually unused at present. If you enter the park via Fairmount Avenue, the road will turn to the right. Go left instead; this will take you to a small loop. That vast fairly area to the north of this loop that extends quite a way back is where the zoo, swan pond, "boy with the boot" statue, ice skating rink, etc, used to be. Just to the right of the loop go up the hill a bit and you will find remnants of old steps, flag pole, etc. Parts of the old restroom used to be visible. The other area that would have had a lot of traffic is the loop where the streetcar stopped; take Graham to Park Entrance Street; go past Grandview Avenue and over the hill. There has been so much road work in the area, however, there may not be much to find. The early map shown in the video is at the bottom of the page at this link: www.thehistoricalsociety.org/h/fairmount-park.html
