+Cei Noob this is just speculation and its unlikely... but I think azuma's attacks took more more out of them then he let Erza believe, so in the end he was to exhausted to avoid Erza, either that or he got cocky/arrogant, but from what we have seen of azuma this is even more unlikely then my theory
