Important points of lecture 1. Polarization is directly proportional to covalent character. 2. Polarising power is defined for cation and polarizibility for anion. Factor's affecting polarization 1.polarization is inversely proportional to size of cation 2.polarizability is directly proportional to size of anion . 3. Polarizing power is directly proportional to charge on cation 4.polarizability is directly proportional to charge on anion 5. Cations having pseudo inert gas configuration have greater polarizing power than inert gas configuration.

The phenomenon of attraction between a cation and an anion in an ionic compound which results in the shift of electron density towards tha cation atom due to it's intensified effective nuclear charge is called polarisation ... Since, the electrons belong to none of the ions It is stationary giving rise to a covalent character () During the shift of electron density ; the electron clouds gets distorted

Between NaCl and KCl, NaCl has more covalent character (smaller Na+ size). But melting point and solubility (in water) of NaCl is higher than that of KCl. Fajan's rule cannot explain it. Lattice and hydration energy can explain it.
